🔍 Understanding the Drought Levels & Misconceptions
Does a drought warning mean it will completely stop raining? No. Even during a drought, brief downpours, localized thunderstorms, or a passing tropical cyclone can still bring rain to your area.
A drought is not measured by a single rainy day, but by a prolonged deficit in overall rainfall over weeks or months. This long-term lack of water dries out the soil, depletes groundwater reservoirs, and lowers river and dam levels. Here is what the different levels actually mean for our environment:
▪️ Exceptional to Extreme: This indicates highly critical conditions. Groundwater levels are severely depleted, soil moisture is completely gone, and agricultural lands face widespread crop failures. Total water rationing is highly likely.
▪️ Moderate to Severe: This means a noticeable shortage of water. Crop damage becomes evident, reservoir levels drop below normal, and voluntary water conservation measures are typically activated.
▪️ Minor to Mild: These are the early warning stages. Soil is beginning to dry up, and while water supplies remain stable for now, plants and crops are starting to feel the stress of lower-than-average rainfall.
