Electric motor systems account for around 70% of industrial electricity consumption, making motor efficiency an important consideration for businesses looking to reduce energy use and their environmental impact.
ABB’s IE5 ultra-premium efficiency synchronous reluctance (SynRM) motors offer one way forward. Compared with commonly used IE3 induction motors, IE5 SynRM technology can reduce energy losses by up to 40%, while offering additional benefits including lower operating temperatures, reduced maintenance requirement and longer equipment life.
The benefits are already being demonstrated in industry. A major water company in the Netherlands implemented ABB SynRM motor and driver packages for its pumping equipment, with estimated energy savings of around 20%. The cooler-running technology is also expected to help extend motor and bearing life, making it even more sustainable.
Combined with a variable speed drive (VSD), these motors can also help reduce energy consumption by matching motor speed to the demands of the application.
