On this International Day of Charity, we are reminded of the power of kindness and the difference each one of us can make by extending a helping hand to those in need. Whether it's through volunteering, donating, or simply raising awareness, every small act of generosity plays a part in a larger movement of positive change.

This year, we are thrilled to have donated and participated in Pan Can Charity Golf Classic at Blainroe Golf Club, Co. Wicklow, in aid of the National Surgical Centre for Pancreatic Cancer at St. Vincent’s Hospital.

Later this month, we will welcome Focus Ireland to our Dublin office, and conduct our Annual Charity Hike in support of Focus Ireland’s Shine A Light campaign, with our offices competing to see who can raise the most funds for the charity.

We recognise that the ability to contribute to these events is a privilege, and we extend our gratitude to those working in these organisations for their dedication and hard work.

Works are nearing completion at Naul Village Park in North Dublin. With construction started in October 2025, the project involved the development of a new public park, including a playground and car park, adjacent to the Séamus Ennis Arts Centre in Naul Village. PUNCH Consulting Engineers provided civil and structural engineering services for the project, working alongside DFLA and Vision Contracting to deliver the scheme for Fingal County Council .

Levels varied from 79m to 75m across the site, leading to the requirement for retaining walls at certain locations. Surface water is managed through a range of SuDS measures, including rain gardens, porous asphalt and reinforced grass areas, alongside a network of land drains. Runoff is collected and conveyed to a new dedicated surface water network before being attenuated within a geocellular tank and discharged at a controlled rate to the public network.

Once open, the park will provide an excellent new amenity for the local community.

This year’s National Heritage Week, we look at “Heritage at Risk”, which encourages us to explore the built, natural and cultural aspects of our heritage that are endangered, for us to reimagine and revive these sites, artefacts and practices.

Our conservation teams had the pleasure of providing civil and structural engineering services for the ambitious restoration of Millbrook House in Abbeyleix, County Laois. A late-Victorian house built in 1885 on 1.7 hectares of land, this beautiful space has been redeveloped into a new high-end 16-bedroom guest house and 40-seat restaurant called Ómós.

The original building was designed by William Isaac Chambers, a well-regarded architect of his time who was also responsible for many designs in Monasterevin for the Earl of Drogheda. Following a Structural Condition Survey carried out by our teams, emergency works began on the property in 2023 to stabilise the building. A temporary works steel structure was erected externally to the perimeter walls, including supporting foundations, braced steelwork frames offset from the building, and horizontal steel channels at three levels on both the internal and external sides of the walls. Later, consolidation of the surviving building and its associated outhouses took place. Extensive external, internal and site-related works were carried out, resulting in the full reconstruction of the historic dwelling.

We are excited to see the opening of the Laya Arena at the RDS, which features the new Anglesea Stand. PUNCH Consulting Engineers is proud to have contributed Civil, Structural, and Traffic Engineering services to this significant project.

The new stand boasts an elegant 25-meter cantilever steel stadium roof with inverted slopes. Its main structural framework consists of a long-span precast concrete design, with the structural components engineered to withstand anticipated dead, imposed, wind, and dynamic crowd loads. This impressive three-level grandstand offers world-class viewing galleries and terraces, accommodating up to 6,775 spectators.

Well done to the project team involved in this important development for both Irish and International sport.

It's a sobering reminder of the urgent need for sustainable living practices to ensure the health and longevity of our planet.

This Earth Overshoot Day, we’re sharing a blog written by Emma Devereux, Technical Director of Ecology at Punch Consulting Engineers, on the topic of virtual water. The concept of virtual water highlights the hidden water footprint embedded in our everyday products and activities. By considering virtual water, we gain insights into the global water trade and how consumption patterns in one part of the world can affect water availability in another. For example, importing a kilogram of rice might seem innocuous, but it requires thousands of litres of water to cultivate. Such revelations emphasise the importance of making informed choices and promoting sustainable practices to reduce our water footprint.

Considered by LAWPRO to be among the most innovative SuDS schemes in Ireland, the Fosse 1.0 at St. Ann’s Court in King’s Island, Limerick, saw the delivery of a nature-based sustainable urban drainage park.

The design was complicated by the presence of previously unidentified services uncovered on site. To address these challenges, PUNCH developed an alternative design solution that overcame these constraints while preserving the scheme’s intended functionality and performance.

As part of the design solution, surface runoff from Island Road is intercepted and diverted into a purpose-designed bioretention rain garden, where it undergoes hydrologic attenuation and treatment through engineered soils and vegetation. This process facilitates the removal of sediments, nutrients, and hydrocarbons, resulting in improved stormwater quality.

The thoughtfully designed space for Limerick City and County Council weaves together urban regeneration and sustainable development initiatives, providing climate resilience to the area.
