A three-phase generator rated 22 kVA does not give you 22 kVA at its 230 V sockets. The Ayerbe AY-24000 V TX E is 22 kVA nominal at 400 V and 7 kVA at 230 V.

With no mains on site, the generator is the supply. Slides 3 to 7 cover nominal against max, the 230 V figure, what machines draw, kW against kVA and phase. Slide 8 is a save card.

Hard floor, soft bond. Soft floor, hard bond.

Easy Fit segments are two diamond segments on a steel base, and you pick two things: grit and bond.

Grit is how coarse. On a polished floor you grind at 30, then 80, fill the cracks, then 140. 16 grit is for prep, when another system goes on top.

Bond goes against the floor, and there are six of them, XXSF to XXHF. Put a hard bond on a hard slab and it glazes over and stops cutting. Put a soft bond on a soft slab and it wears away before the job is done.

Each grinder takes them on its own carrier plate, so tell us the machine as well.

The Irish hand-arm vibration figures, from Regulation 135(1) of S.I. No. 299 of 2007: an exposure action value of 2.5 m/s2 A(8) and an exposure limit value of 5 m/s2 A(8). A(8) is the day's exposure normalised to eight hours, so the time on the tool counts as well as the machine.

Slide 5 has the figures the makers list for four machines we hire out. They are maker-listed values, not in-use readings. Slide 8 is a save card for the van.

Irish construction sites run portable tools off a 110 V transformer with the midpoint earthed. That is Regulation 81(4)(c) of S.I. No. 299 of 2007: above 25 V and up to 125 V AC, the secondary midpoint (star point on three-phase) goes to earth and a transformer is double wound isolating.

Check before you plug in: taped or damaged leads, a long thin lead on a high-load tool and a transformer carrying more than its continuous rating. Slides 5 and 6 cover them, and slide 8 is a save card for the van.

Every coating comes off a slab. The trick is knowing what to send at it. Paint grinds. Glue smears under abrasives; PCD shaves it clean. Thick epoxy wants a scarifier before any grinder touches it. Felt-backed vinyl takes a scraper, then a grinder for the glue film it leaves. All ten slides below; the matrix on slide nine is the one to save for the next strip-out job.

What's the worst thing you've ever had to get off a floor?

The last cut is the one everyone sees. PROXXON's MICROMOT tools put a 50 mm disc on a long neck for the spots a big grinder cannot reach: pipe cutouts, edge chamfers, polishing a visible cut. Four cordless tools share one battery. Long-neck grinder €98.57, the rest at the counter.
