Now is the time to sow winter salad seeds if you want to enjoy fresh, crisp greens right through winter. 🌱

Varieties like lamb’s lettuce, winter purslane, rocket, spinach 'Verdil' and mustard leaves thrive in cooler weather and bring colour, flavour, and nutrition to your plate when little else is growing. Winter salads can be grown in polytunnels, greenhouses, or protected outdoor beds.

You can also start some flowers now for an earlier bloom next year. 🌼

There was a great turn out for the farm walk at Green Earth Organics yesterday. Very interesting to see the variety of machinery that gets used to grow the crops.

Kenneth explained about the rotation and fertilisers used. The crops looked very good, some suffered a bit from the drought. One field was in the fertility building phase and it had an impressive amount of Egyptian and Persian Clovers in it as well as other green manure plants. 🌿

A look at the busy packing shed at the end of the walk gave a good impression of the work behind the very well organised delivery system of organic vegetables, fruit and groceries.

Thanks to Kenneth and the team for having us and William Deasy of Teagasc for organising.

Here you can see what two weeks of growth looks like for Radish, Vetch, Winter Vetch, Rye, Phacelia, Crimson Clover & Squarrose Clover. 🌱

We sowed these green manure varieties in pots in preparation for our display at The Ploughing Championships in September. We'll have a stand in the Organic Village.

Find all these green manures and more on our website.

Now is the ideal time to sow green manures/cover crops in empty plots 🌱

Growing green manures over winter can help prevent a loss of nutrients and structure in the soil. The earlier a cover crop can be sown the better, as it then has more time to get established.

We supply green manures in small packs suitable for hobby gardens as well as in larger sacks for field scale production.

We have range of different varieties and mixes available on the website. If you need advice on choosing the right option for your garden or field, give us a call on 027 50710 - we are happy to advise.

Winter Cropping Potatoes - Available Now πŸ₯”πŸŒ±

It does seem a bit early to be talking about the festive period but if you want new potatoes on the table for Christmas dinner, then August/early September is the time to plant.

We have two varieties available: Maris Peer & Charlotte (both conventional untreated). These seed potatoes have been kept in cold storage, which tricks them into thinking it's still winter and stops them sprouting.

Find them here πŸ‘‰ https://www.fruithillfarm.com/seeds-and-propagation/organic-seed-potatoes-ireland/early-potatoes.html
