Breather membranes: why the balance between vapour permeability and water tightness matters

A breather membrane needs to do two jobs: allow moisture vapour to escape from the building fabric while preventing liquid water from getting in.

Getting the balance right is essential to managing moisture, protecting the building envelope and helping maintain the long-term performance of the structure.

But what do the two key metrics mean?

💧 Water tightness measures a membrane’s ability to resist driving rain pe*******on, helping protect the insulation and underlying structure from rain and other sources of moisture.

💨 Vapour permeability describes how readily water vapour can pass through a material, allowing moisture within the building fabric to escape rather than become trapped.

Both properties are important when selecting a membrane for a specific construction application.

Today, members of the ITP team brought our company slogan to life by taking part in Wear It Pink Day. With home-baked cakes, generous donations and plenty of pink, the day gave us a meaningful opportunity to come together and reflect on why this important cause matters to so many.

A special thank you to NK Creations for donating the beautiful pink metal flower—a lasting reminder of the day and the cause we were proud to support.

All of us know someone who's been affected by cancer, whether that’s a colleague, a friend or a family member. Today was about looking out for each other, not just at work, but at home too. Together we raised £165 with thanks to the company for matching staff donations - all to be donated to Breast Cancer Now 🩷
