Case Study | Mine Shaft Stabilisation and Capping for the TransPennine Route Upgrade

MGF was pleased to collaborate with BAM Nuttall and TRU West on the £2 billion TransPennine Route Upgrade.

At Deighton Station in Huddersfield, two historic coal mine shafts near the new station build and track upgrade works, posed a long‑term safety risk due to their location on a sloping embankment next to live railway lines, and uncertain historical records.

The solution was to excavate down to the shafts and cap them with reinforced concrete slabs inside a cofferdam to allow the track works to progress. MGF delivered a bespoke, cost-effective solution that overcame the challenges and enabled operatives to safely access, stabilise and cap the twin shafts.

The innovative ‘Lift Lock’ mechanism prevents accidental sheet release when the lifting chain is under tension, ensuring maximum safety on site.

An additional plunger mechanism is available when using an extractor, featuring a manual lock mechanism that is deactivated by hand for added control.

Scheduled to be fully operational by early 2027, the site will deliver a circa 300% increase in manufacturing capacity through modern techniques, improved efficiencies and enhanced quality control.
