A key part of our quality checks is measuring surface roughness (Ra) on a vessel using a highly accurate, calibrated digital micrometer.

For many of our clients, hygiene is critical. Surface finish plays a huge role in that. The rougher the surface, the greater the risk of microbiological build-up, which is why Ra testing is a non-negotiable part of our quality control process.

We ensure surface roughness meets our clients high standard requirements for hygienic and regulated environments. Every vessel is checked, recorded and verified before it leaves our workshop.

It’s a small measurement, but it has a big impact on performance, compliance and long-term reliability.

Exciting renewable energy innovation in progress!

Able Engineering is proud to be manufacturing a new Archimedes screw prototype for micro hydro specialist FreeFlow 69, designed to convert flowing water into clean, renewable power.

This next-generation design combines a steel shaft with light weight flights, creating a solution that is lighter, more cost-effective and more energy efficient than traditional systems.

FreeFlow 69 continue to lead the way in micro hydro power, with over a decade of expertise across water wheels and Archimedes screw technologies. We’re proud to support them as a trusted partner, building on our ongoing collaboration producing their stainless steel water wheels.

Projects like this are a great example of how innovative design and precision engineering can help accelerate the transition to low-carbon energy solutions.

Three malt silos, built side by side.

We’ve recently completed the manufacture of three bespoke malt silos for a well-known whisky distillery, all produced in tandem to keep lead times tight and delivery efficient.

These were made to replace existing silos on site, so every vessel was built to exact measurements to ensure a smooth fit and a straightforward changeover.

Manufacturing all three at the same time allowed us to maintain consistency, control quality, and support a faster installation without compromise.

Built for reliability, not just day-to-day operation.

This duty/standby pump configuration was designed and manufactured to fit an existing large UK brewery, forming part of their glycol cooling system.

The setup uses a dual pump arrangement, with only one pump running at a time while the other is bypassed. The result is a built-in fail-safe: if one pump is taken out of action, flow can be diverted instantly and operations can continue without disruption.

Designed to work within the constraints of an established site, the system was:

- Manufactured in our workshop
- Built to suit existing pipework and interfaces
- Fully installed on site by the Able Engineering
- It’s a simple concept, but one that’s critical in environments where uptime matters and failure isn’t an option.

Once we’ve manufactured your bespoke equipment… it doesn’t stop there.

The photo shows a large, custom-built titanium dioxide filter leaving our purpose-built workshop, lifted clear of the building and onto its journey to a European client.

For equipment of this scale, the real complexity often begins once fabrication is complete.

Behind a move like this is extensive planning, training and coordination:

- Trained banksmen managing lifts and crane operations

- Detailed lift plans and risk assessments tailored to the load

- Coordination with traffic officers and haulage partners for wide-load transport

- Correct securing and protection of oversized vessels for long-distance and international delivery

- Careful sequencing to ensure safe delivery, unloading and installation readiness on site

Every stage is deliberate. Every detail matters.

Because when you’re moving equipment of this size, there is no room for shortcuts.

Engineering doesn’t end at the workshop doors.
It continues through logistics, safety, transport and installation, all handled with the same care and accountability as the build itself.

We thought this one was pretty cool.

We designed, manufactured and installed jacketed pipe work for a major UK chocolate manufacturer, built to meet the demands of a hygienic food production environment.

The system uses an outer jacket flooded with hot water to regulate the temperature of melted chocolate within the main pipe, keeping flow and product quality consistent.

This was a fully bespoke solution, designed to fit an existing site and integrate with current instruments and systems. Able Engineering delivered the full mechanical package from design and manufacture through to installation on site.

Able Engineering is currently recruiting for a Tradesperson Apprenticeship in Welding & Fabrication, a structured 5-year programme where you can earn while you learn, achieve an NVQ Level 3 qualification, and build real, in-demand skills from day one.

You’ll be trained on the shop floor by experienced Tradespeople, supported through college, and trusted with real responsibility as your skills grow. Your pay grows too, with a clear pathway into a long-term skilled career.
