It’s Stoke on Trent Day!

Following the success of the centenary year celebrations we get to celebrate everything Stoke-on-Trent once more!

This year is especially significant for Fletcher Moorland as we celebrate 80 years of supporting industry with Stoke-on-Trent always being our home! Founded in 1946, we were up Hanley duck, providing Motor Rewinds for the post war industries of Stoke. Coal Mining, Iron and Steel Works and of course, The Potteries!

80 Years on and Stoke is still our home, but our influence on keeping industry running has grown. We support businesses and organisations the length and breadth of the UK with rotating equipment repair, industrial electronics repair, precision engineering, reliability services and condition monitoring systems.

It’s down to the work carried out in our workshops on Elenora Street, Stoke that your energy is generated, food reaches your table and you get to experience the thrills and spills of theme parks, as well as playing a key role in keeping many other industry sectors operating efficiently.

As a third generation family business, we’re proud to call Stoke on Trent our home and are looking forward to celebrating at where else, but at the home of Stoke City Football Club, the BET365 Stadium this coming July.

Happy Stoke day Duck!

We visit all kinds of sites, from deep mines to aerospace manufacturing. It’s fair to say for our driving team no two days are the same as they collect and return units from our customers.

On occasion though, you do get to see some dramatic sites. Like this view taken by Rob while delivering out in Tywyn Wales.

With our inhouse team and trusted network of couriers serve the whole of the UK with industrial maintenance services, morning, noon and night.

Our 365 days a year, 24/7 manned workshop is here to react when your breakdown happens. We can get to work as soon as the unit arrives, no waiting on the 9-5pm or over the weekend. We do our upmost to limit your downtime, helping you keep production on track!

Who’s got the next Instagram worthy location for us to visit?

Fletcher Moorland work with many key players in the Renewable Energy sector on keeping their equipment operating.

Those working in wind energy will likely be interested in the images below. Those PCB’s pictured have been purposely designed and built by in our Drives & Controls department.

We’ve said before that “Testing” is perhaps the most important element of any repair. Testing on arrival to identify faults, testing during and after repair to ensure that our customers can be confident that once the unit is received at site it can be installed and run as anticipated.

The latest project from our team is a dedicated Pitch Control test rig, enabling us to simulate the behaviour of repaired Enercon Power Pitch CS82 board and Control Board Pitch PCBs within our workshop environment.

For wind turbine operators, pitch control systems play a vital role in both turbine performance and safety. While replacing failed components and repairing damaged circuit paths is important, the real confidence comes from being able to verify functionality before the unit is reinstalled.

Through investing in application-specific testing capabilities, we're helping renewable energy operators reduce risk, minimise repeat failures, shorten maintenance interventions, and extend the service life of valuable assets.

At Fletcher Moorland, our objective is simple: repair equipment properly, validate its performance, and help our customers maximise the lifespan of their assets while reducing unnecessary waste and replacement costs. For those cultured enough, we’re aiming for a “triggers brush” solution (you can let us know if you get that reference in the comments).

If you’re working in the renewables sector and are looking for a partner to support your maintenance teams, we’re ready to help!

Joe may be our Technical Manager, but that doesn't mean you'll never find him at the repair bench.

When we caught up with him, he was investigating a PCB from an Anybus ProfiHub. At first glance, there are no obvious signs of failure. The board is clean, with no evidence of burning, damaged components or any catastrophic fault.

However, as many electronics engineers know, some of the most challenging failures leave little visual evidence.

Following initial assessment and diagnostic testing, the assigned engineer identified that the unit was drawing excessive current. Using thermal imaging, an area of concern was highlighted, prompting further investigation.

Joe is now carrying out a detailed PCB inspection using illuminated magnification, checking for subtle defects such as:

• Cracked or dry solder joints
• Damaged PCB tracks
• Failed surface-mount components
• Corrosion or contamination
• Other signs of component-level degradation

A reminder that successful industrial electronics repairs are rarely about replacing parts at random; they're about understanding the root cause of failure.

📢 We're currently recruiting Electronics Repair Engineers.

If you have experience repairing, fault-finding or maintaining industrial automation equipment, we'd like to hear from you.

This repair is a great example of the value a true multi-discipline repair facility can bring to Facilities Management and NHS maintenance teams.

We’re proud to support NHS estates and maintenance departments in helping keep critical facilities operational and resilient.

Although this repair is currently with our Drives & Controls department, the primary asset itself sits within our Electro-Mechanical division. The unit is an Armstrong pump which developed a fault and began leaking. As part of the wider assessment process, the inverter assembly was transferred internally to our Drives & Controls team for inspection and refurbishment.

In this case, Terry, one of our time-served electronics engineers who has been with Fletcher Moorland for six years is carrying out the investigation. During fault finding he identified a failed relay requiring replacement before progressing into further inspection of the IGBT and associated sub-boards.

The inverter will undergo full inspection and refurbishment where required, including the replacement of damaged or suspect components, alongside detailed PCB checks to identify any failed tracks or developing faults that could impact long-term reliability.

Once the electronic repair work is completed, the inverter assembly will be transferred back to our Electro-Mechanical team for rebuild and final integration into the pump unit.

Having Electro-Mechanical, Drives & Controls, Servo, Precision Engineering and Reliability Services all operating under one roof allows work to move efficiently between departments, helping reduce turnaround times and streamline the repair process for our customers.

For NHS estates teams and Facilities Management providers, that means fewer external suppliers, improved continuity throughout the repair journey, and faster return of critical assets back into service.

The workshop lights never really go off at Fletcher Moorland.

Our repair and support teams are available 24/7, 365 days a year, helping maintenance teams minimise downtime when production can’t wait.

That’s exactly why these two Danfoss drives landed on our benches recently for urgent assessment and repair.

In the first photo, Aaron is investigating a reported earth fault. The first step is always controlled testing under monitored conditions to understand exactly what the drive is doing, identify the fault behaviour and pinpoint the likely cause before any repair work begins.

Over on Darren’s bench, another Danfoss drive has already been through assessment. So far, the unit hasn’t reproduced the reported fault, which maintenance engineers will know can sometimes be the challenge in itself. Darren has completed the unit service in line with our SOP process and it’ll now move through final testing before heading back to the customer.

Further into the workshop, Adam is stripping down a Baumuller drive from a pair of units sent in together. Both have suffered from heavy dust contamination, although one is definitely in better condition than the other. The customer notes on the second unit simply read: “Plugged in, went bang.”

During assessment, we discovered somebody had previously drilled through the capacitors PCB… safe to say that raised a few eyebrows in the workshop.

Thorough investigation with care, is what leads to lasting repairs and that’s why our customers trust our expert team. We don’t just replace the obvious we investigate to find the root cause and repair to prevent returns.

If you’ve got a damaged or suspect device on site. It’s easy to arrange a collection with our team to investigate. j

A recent repair moving through the Moorland workshop an oven fan assembly and 11kW ABB motor used in food production.

By the time we caught up with Jack, most of the repair work had already been completed, with the rebuild nearing final stages.

This overhaul included:

✔ Full strip-down and assessment
✔ Electrical testing including IR and Baker surge testing
✔ Reclaiming worn bearing journals and housings
✔ Dynamic balancing to G1 standard
✔ New bearings, oil seals and drive components
✔ Manufacture of a brand new fan shaft
✔ Laser alignment and final vibration analysis testing

Working in food production environments means reliability matters. It’s not enough to simply replace failed parts, it’s about understanding why they failed and returning the equipment to run reliably with a reduced risk of repeat failure.

Every repair is fully documented through our operating system and supported with a SERVICEview engineer video explaining the work completed and issues identified.

Sometimes you meet people who you intuitively know love and are extremely passionate about the work they do.

Fletcher Moorland recently hosted David Webster CEO of the Dougie Mac to discuss our fundraising as part of our 80th year celebration. We were impressed by how enthusiastic he is in championing the Dougie Mac, its services, and its people.

David spoke about how the hospice is there to provide compassion and dignity, with a strong focus on palliative care but also supporting MND and Dementia. It’s always adapting to meet the needs of the local community.

The work of the hospice is clearly something he is proud of, acknowledging the significant effort and energy of the 500+ employees and over 800 volunteers who enable them to deliver their outstanding levels of care. A level of quality, that is acknowledged by the CQC, with some of their comments really landing home on how important quality hospice care is, “..found a positive culture which put people at the heart of their own care, creating a trusted relationship between staff, people and their loved ones all while ensuring their safety and wellbeing.”

Fletcher Moorland has been part of the Hospice’s story since it’s founding as Matt Fletcher was keen to share.

It’s only fitting that we continue to support as we celebrate our 80th successful year in industry.

Whether you have personal experience of accessing the hospices services as our Operations Director Di and Operations Manager Maddie do, or you simply believe people deserve dignity and compassion at the most difficult of times; we’d invite you to support our fundraising efforts.

It’s only through community support the Dougie Mac can continue to deliver, outstanding service.
