Behind every operation is a sterile services team making sure surgical instruments are clean, checked and ready for use.

For Sterile Services Week, we’re recognising the skill, care and hard work of these teams across the UK. Working under pressure and often out of sight, they play a vital role in patient safety and keeping theatre lists running.

In our latest interview, a Surgical Holdings colleague who began working in sterile services in 2010 shares their experience - from learning to identify surgical instruments to managing quality and responding when equipment breaks down.

They also explain how that experience shapes their work today, including understanding why prompt instrument repairs matter to hospitals.

Thank you to everyone working in sterile services for everything you do.

Could repairing more surgical instruments help hospitals cut waste and costs? We believe it can.

In the last 12 months, Surgical Holdings has repaired around 30,000 devices, saving approximately 18,500 kg of CO₂ compared with replacing them.

From individual instruments to full surgical trays, our repair and refurbishment teams help hospitals keep reusable equipment in service for longer. It’s one practical way we’re supporting greener theatres and the NHS’s net zero ambition.

From a piece of round steel bar to a beautifully finished Stille surgical scissor ✂️

This case captures the transformation at every stage. The steel is spread and forged into shape, excess material is removed for recycling, and the scissor is then machined, hardened, ground and polished.

The result is a high-quality, Swedish-manufactured scissor. Seeing each stage side by side gives a real appreciation of the skill and precision that goes into making it.

Supporting our industry is important to us, but so is giving back to the community we call home.

Surgical Holdings was proud to be headline sponsor of the Southend Business Show, which brought together more than 400 delegates and over 100 local businesses.

Having been based in Southend-on-Sea since 1988, we’re passionate about supporting the local economy, creating apprenticeship opportunities and helping people develop their careers within the city.

It was a brilliant opportunity to meet other local businesses, strengthen relationships with our suppliers and share more about our investment in employee development.

Thank you to the Southend Economic Development team for organising such a successful event, and to everyone who stopped by to speak with us.

We’re proud to be part of Southend’s business community and look forward to continuing to play our part in its future.
