solid brass Engraved Handle from the William & Mary period (1689-1694) and Lifting Handle. All Made in England from original patterns. In Antique and Polished Brass finish. Desk, made by , is in walnut. 

William & Mary style furniture was popular from 1700 to 1725 in Holland and Britain. It featured high relief carving, strong curves and elaborate wood turning. This design movement had a positive impact on the craftsmanship and quality of British furniture. The innovative Dutch furniture craftsman Gerrit Jensen was appointed Royal Cabinet Maker. New items of furniture were created in this period such as the daybed and the writing desk which was an adaptation of the bureau cabinet

The Scarborough Rotunda, opened in 1829, is one of the earliest purpose-built museums in the world. Designed by “Father of English Geology” William “Strata” Smith (1769-1839). His Geological “Map that changed the World” was the foundation for Charles Darwin's (1809-1882) work on evolution. A fascinating gateway to Yorkshire’s Dinosaur  Coast.

Solid brass Dicky Dickinson Door Knocker in Antique Brass finish suitable for your front door and to add interest to interior doors eg the bathroom or a child’s bedroom door.  A novelty talking point, especially for those who love local history and a good story! 

Quite a character! And a man for our times. Dicky Dickinson’s entrepreneurial spirit enabled him, disabled and poorly educated as he was, to make a huge success of the Spa project in Scarborough in the early 1700s. First celebrated Governor of the Scarborough Spa (c.1669 – 1739), he made a lot of money for the town (and also, incidentally, for himself!) selling Spa waters. 

Natural spring waters bubbling out from the cliff were discovered by Thomasin Farrer, wife of the Bailiff, one of Scarborough’s leading citizens. The site became the precursor to the present Spa complex which later developed into a fashionable attraction in the 18th century. This wealth lifted Scarborough out of the miserable conditions then prevailing, eventually to become known as the “Jewel of Seaside Resorts”.
