Before New Start Energy, Justin spent years at sea.

Commissioning electrical propulsion on DP rigs and offshore vessels for GE Power Conversion, then as an electrical specialist for projects at Ensco. The job was simple to say and hard to do: keep the drives running so the vessel could hold station, whatever the weather was doing.

That is the same work we do now on winch systems, propulsion and active heave compensation. And with fuel and carbon costs climbing for UK operators, a drive running efficiently is worth more than it used to be.

Four manufacturers. One engineer.

Justin started out at Emerson Control Techniques twenty-one years ago, selecting and designing drives for machine tool and winder applications. Then ABB, servicing frequency drives across industry and marine. Then offshore for GE Power Conversion, commissioning propulsion on DP rigs. Then rig upgrades abroad for Ensco. Then back to ABB.

Most drive engineers come up through one make and stay there. Working inside a manufacturer teaches you how a drive is meant to behave. Repairing them for a living teaches you how they actually fail. Justin has done both, for years, on both sides.

That is the twenty years behind New Start Energy, and it belongs to one person.

Nobody ever wrote down how this machine worked. That was the actual job.

A car baler running on a Telemecanique PLC that nobody makes or supports any more. No manual, no backup. So we watched it instead, tracing every signal passing between the components until the logic showed itself.

Then we rebuilt the control program from scratch on a modern PLC, on open architecture so there's no being tied to one manufacturer next time.

This is Jean-Marc, onboard and in the thick of it.

He joined New Start Energy a year ago, and he's already on the Baxenden PLC job alongside Justin, not fetching tools, actually doing the work.

Nobody learns this trade from a book. You learn it stood next to someone who's already done it a hundred times. One day Jean-Marc will be that someone for the next lad starting out.

There's a name on our health and safety poster that never makes it onto this page.

Wendy runs the operations side of New Start Energy, the schedules, the customer visits, the tool calibrations, the thing that actually gets our engineers where they need to be, with what they need to have.

She also runs two businesses of her own alongside it. Every trade business has an engineer everyone can name, and someone quietly holding the whole thing together that nobody outside the building knows. Ours is Wendy.

This car baler's control panel was over thirty years old, with no backup and no manual for what it actually did.

It kept failing. Every time, we had to work out the old logic from scratch, then patch it back together to buy a bit more time.

Eventually we built a brand new control system for it — some of the work done outside, in the dark, in weather that wasn't playing along.

Eleven months on, it's running properly again. Doors open when they should. Bales form when they should.

Old kit like this is still out there on plenty of sites. Ours got a second life.

Building drives that can take a beating. Literally.

Behind the scenes at New Start Energy this week: one of our Variable Speed Drives going into a custom built aluminium enclosure, hand finished and wired in house.

Why the strong case? Out in the field, control gear doesn't get the luxury of a clean, climate controlled cabinet. It gets knocked and needs to be seen. That's why we use reflective hi vis banding and a heavy duty aluminium shell. It protects the electronics inside while staying tough enough for site conditions.

Every unit is assembled and tested by our team before it goes anywhere near a job site, because reliable energy control starts with reliable build quality.
