Offshore systems don’t fail at convenient times.

One of the biggest causes of unexpected downtime in marine operations is electrical and drive-related failure, especially within Variable Speed Drive (VSD) systems controlling pumps, thrusters, compressors, winches, and HVAC systems.

Common warning signs engineers should never ignore:
🔹 Intermittent drive trips
🔹 Overheating cabinets or motors
🔹 Harmonic distortion issues
🔹 Cooling fan failures
🔹 Moisture and salt contamination
🔹 Unstable motor performance under load

In offshore and marine environments, these issues can escalate quickly due to vibration, humidity, salt air, and continuous operation.

A proactive approach to VSD maintenance can help:
✅ Reduce unplanned downtime
✅ Improve energy efficiency
✅ Extend equipment lifespan
✅ Lower operational costs
✅ Improve system reliability offshore

At New Start Energy, we support marine operators with industrial automation expertise, VSD support, emergency response solutions, and engineering assistance when reliability matters most.

Keeping critical systems running offshore is about preparation, response time, and the right technical support.

Great day today at the Machine Building North Expo!

The New Start Energy team had a fantastic time connecting with manufacturers, OEMs, automation specialists, and industry professionals from across the sector. It was great to have so many conversations around Automation, and to see how businesses are working to improve reliability and reduce downtime in demanding environments.

Events like this are a brilliant reminder of how much innovation and collaboration is happening within UK industry, and we’re proud to be part of those conversations.

A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to chat with us, share ideas, and discuss upcoming projects. We genuinely enjoyed meeting so many people in the space and building new connections throughout the day.

Thank you to the organisers for putting together such a well-run event, and to everyone who made the day so welcoming and worthwhile.

We’re looking forward to continuing the conversations over the coming weeks.

Working quayside on a marine setup where the environment does not give you any leeway.

Everything is exposed. Everything is working hard. And everything needs to keep running.

When a drive fails here, it is felt straight away. Operations slow down, and pressure builds quickly to get things moving again.

This is the reality of marine work. It is not about perfect conditions, it is about being ready when things do not go to plan.

Specialist Insight: Motor & Drive Mismatch, A Common Overlooked Risk

We recently supported a system where a newly installed motor was paired with an existing VSD. On paper, everything looked compatible, but performance issues quickly followed.

Symptoms included:
• Irregular speed control
• Increased current draw
• Audible motor stress under load

The cause? Subtle mismatch between motor characteristics and drive configuration.

After recalibration and parameter adjustments, performance stabilised.

Engineer Insight:
When pairing motors and drives, don’t rely on “close enough”:

Confirm motor data is fully aligned with drive settings
Review control mode (V/f vs vector) for the application
Check load profile — especially for variable torque systems

Even small mismatches can lead to long-term inefficiency or failure.

Precision matters more than it seems.

Case Study: Cooling Failure Leading to Repeated Drive Trips

A vessel reported repeated VSD trips during extended operation, particularly under higher load conditions. No obvious faults logged beyond overtemperature warnings.

On inspection, the root cause wasn’t the drive itself, it was the environment around it.

We identified:
• Blocked cooling filters restricting airflow
• Salt ingress accelerating internal contamination
• Elevated ambient temperatures in the drive cabinet

Once airflow was restored and contamination addressed, the system returned to stable operation.

Engineer Insight:
In marine environments, always consider external factors before assuming internal failure:

Check panel ventilation and filter condition
Monitor cabinet temperature, not just drive readings
Inspect for salt build-up, especially in older installations

Sometimes the issue isn’t the equipment, it’s what’s happening around it.

Specialist Knowledge: Why Harmonics Matter More Offshore

In marine environments, electrical systems are often more sensitive than onshore setups, and harmonics can quietly cause major issues.

We’ve worked on systems where harmonic distortion led to:
• Overheating transformers
• Nuisance tripping of protection systems
• Reduced lifespan of critical components

Engineer Insight:
If you’re running multiple drives onboard, consider:

Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) levels
Cable lengths and installation layout
Whether line reactors or filters are in place

Ignoring harmonics doesn’t make them go away, it just delays the problem.

Understanding your system early can prevent costly failures later.

Engineer Insight: The Hidden Cost of Poor VSD Setup

One of the most common issues we see isn’t failure, it’s incorrect configuration.

On a recent marine application, a drive had been installed and left running with default parameters. The result:

• Excessive motor heating
• Inefficient energy usage
• Reduced equipment lifespan

After optimisation:
✔ Improved motor efficiency
✔ Reduced thermal stress
✔ Smoother operation under varying loads

What to check on your systems:

Motor nameplate data correctly entered
Acceleration/deceleration times suited to the application
Torque limits aligned with actual load requirements

A correctly set up drive doesn’t just run, it performs.
