Let’s look at this critically. A wide weld pass, as shown in the video, leads to excessive heat input per unit area and increases transverse tensile residual stress at the weld toe, where fatigue cracks typically initiate. This stress acts normal to the fusion line and accelerates Mode I fatigue crack growth.

Fewer passes may save time, but the cost often appears later in the form of reduced fatigue life.
