Celebrating differences. Driving unity.
Last week, more than 300 colleagues from across the globe came together at Bildungscampus Heilbronn for sbp meet & connect, including our new colleagues from Tensys.

Over two inspiring days, participants took part in more than 50 workshops and 15 excursions. They shared experiences, exchanged knowledge and discovered new perspectives, celebrating the diversity that makes stronger.

It was a pleasure to have so many colleagues in one place, connected by what we create together. That is sbp as one.

Two bridges, each with a distinct answer to the challenges of its location.

The Friesenbrücke in Weener is a lift-and-swing railway bridge designed to reconnect the Ems crossing. The Rathausbrücke in Tuttlingen, a pedestrian and cycle bridge, features an innovative semi-integral structure and a considered use of steel, timber and concrete.

Both projects have been nominated for the German Bridge Award 2027. The jury has shortlisted six projects across the categories of road and railway bridges, and pedestrian and cycle bridges. The nominations recognise outstanding structures and the engineering teams behind them.

Our sincere thanks go to the jury and the organisers, the Bundesingenieurkammer and the Verband Beratender Ingenieure (VBI), for this recognition. Congratulations to all the nominated teams and project partners.

The winners will be announced at the award ceremony in Dresden on 10 March 2027.

A wonderful recognition for the Josef-Schwarz-Schule in Heilbronn.

The school was awarded the German Sustainability Award for Architecture 2026 by the DGNB German Sustainable Building Council and the forum nachhaltige architektur team. The jury recognised a holistic approach that makes sustainability part of the school’s architecture, its connection to the surrounding neighbourhood and the way it is used and operated every day.

We are proud to have contributed the structural engineering. Lightweight timber and steel construction helps reduce the loads on the supporting structure, while the project’s wider sustainability approach brings together resource-conscious construction, activated clay ceilings and an energy concept combining geothermal energy, heat pumps and photovoltaics. The result is a welcoming place for learning and community, designed with both its environmental impact and long-term use in mind.

Congratulations to Behnisch Architekten, Schwarz Immobilienmanagement and everyone involved in this outstanding project. A shared achievement worth celebrating.

What if a building could turn movement into architecture?
At Shanghai Grand Opera House, that idea takes shape in a spiral rooftop promenade, inviting visitors upwards to a new viewpoint over the Huangpu. Opened on October 17, this iconic new landmark brings architecture, performance spaces, acoustics and engineering together as one complete experience.

For sbp, the challenge was to make the fluid, seemingly weightless form work in reality. A curved inner structure channels the forces, while carefully designed steel elements support the broad roof and stairs. The structure also remains comfortable and stable as crowds move across it. This engineering makes the architectural vision possible while staying largely behind the scenes.

Completed after six years of construction, the opera is the result of close collaboration across many disciplines.

Today marks an important moment for rail travel between the Netherlands and Germany: A special train on the route Groningen–Bunde–Leer–Weener celebrates the start of service on parts of the 173 kilometre “Wunderline” corridor and highlights the role of the sbp Friesen Bridge over the River Ems in reconnecting the route.

sbp provided the structural engineering for the Friesen Bridge near Weener, which forms part of the rail link between Leer in East Frisia and Groningen in the Netherlands. After a cargo ship collided with the old bridge and partially destroyed the overpass, a complete replacement was required. The new structure has been designed as a lift and turn bridge that connects to the existing foreshore bridges, with two fixed superstructures on the Weener and Ihrhove sides and a movable swing section with a pivot pier on the Ihrhove side to keep the navigation channel clear. Deep foundation piers on land and shallow foundation piers in the river support the new superstructures, and the bridge also includes a footpath and cycle path as well as a separate service and rescue route.

High accuracy requirements and poor subsoil conditions near the coast, and their influence on the rotation of the bridge, presented particular technical challenges and were carefully analysed as part of the planning process.

Sometimes the best news comes in pairs: Two projects to which sbp contributed key bridge structures have received the 2026 American Society of Landscape Architects Honor Award:

- Guangming Mountain Forest Greenway – Bridging City and Canopy, Shenzhen, China
- Gathering Place, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA

The ASLA Professional Awards honor outstanding landscape architecture projects worldwide and highlight exemplary collaboration between landscape architects, engineers, architects, and clients. They also recognize designs that strengthen long-term, sustainable relationships between cities, people, and ecosystems.

Within Guangming Mountain Forest Greenway, sbp designed key bridge structures that carry visitors into the forest canopy and establish a continuous connection between city and landscape. The bridges integrate environmental technologies such as solar panels and protect sensitive woodland habitats with their lightweight footprints while creating a highly accessible, nature-based public destination.

At Gathering Place, sbp designed the Williams Crossing pedestrian bridge, creating a 1,440-foot link across the Arkansas River and connecting the park to an extended waterfront trail network. Together with extensive new plantings, wetland gardens, and re-shaped topography, the bridge supports access to high-quality public green space and a renewed riverfront.

Konstanz has a striking hybrid timber and concrete structure that now marks the entrance to the city: the Panorama Konstanz, engineered by schlaich bergermann partner and opened to the public on 12 September 2026.

The new exhibition building brings together history, art and architecture in a unique spatial experience. At its heart is the monumental 360° panorama by Yadegar Asisi and his studio asisi, staging the historic Council of Konstanz. The central panoramic space is a large-volume, almost column-free interior with a 15 m high staircase tower, complemented by exhibition areas, a multifunctional space and a restaurant with a wrap-around terrace offering views over Konstanz and Lake Konstanz.

The structure is realised as a hybrid construction: a solid reinforced-concrete base carries the prefabricated timber superstructure. Coloured expanded-metal façade elements shape the appearance of the 52.5 m high cylindrical volume and give it a dynamic and unmistakable character. Due to challenging subsoil conditions, the building is founded on bored piles up to 42.5 m in length.

We are proud to have contributed to this ambitious project with preliminary and design engineering, approval planning (concrete and timber structures), ex*****on planning (concrete), and consulting for ex*****on planning (timber).
