Finnegan describes the edgy yet enduring brotherhood forged among the swell of the surf; and recalling his own apprenticeship to the world’s most famous and challenging waves, he considers the intense relationship formed between man, board and water 🤝 .

Barbarian Days is an old-school adventure story, a social history, an extraordinary exploration of one man’s gradual mastering 👨‍🎓 of an exacting and little-understood art. It is a memoir of dangerous obsession and enchantment.

From Gen Z to Boomers, got it all this issue 126 🥳.

What to expect more from this issue🤔

RIDING THE CANCER WAVE: From L.A. they head to the chilly waters above San Francisco ☮️ for the story of Danielle Cass, an award-winning journalist and an AI safety leader at Microsoft.

TRAMORE: Ireland’s 🇮🇪 West Coast with its slabs and big-wave set-ups has gotten plenty of online attention over the past decade and every corner has been mapped and every swell is predicted, photographed and filmed, and posted globally.

THE AFTERLIFE OF AN ICON: The Endless Summer, the greatest surf film ever made? It’s a yes 👍 from Pacific Longboarder and it’s certainly a yes from renowned surf collector Marcus Rebeschini, an expat Aussie 🇦🇺 living and working in Japan.

FIJI TEMPO: Tiny peeling waves in crystal-clear water over thriving reefs 🪸, a cruisy resort sitting atop a sand island surrounded by a lagoon . . . geez, these eight pages are a tonic just to look at.

MALONE & SAN SEBASTIAN: Jumping to the north of Spain 🇪🇸 and San Sebastian, legend photographer Lance partners with writer Inés Alcántara to bring us six pages featuring local longboarder Gabi Malone ripping his home breaks 🌊.

NOOSA FEST 2026: At the other end of the age spectrum, there was an Over 75s Division at the Noosa Fest this year and we asked the venerable Phil Jarratt, 🇦🇺 himself an over 70s competitor, to bring us the news on what went down.

LENS FLAIR: They say it every issue - how can it be better than the last? But it always is. Another array of extraordinary photos 📸 from around the world.

…and much more…

Emma and Louis are exploring the oceans 🐳, and everyone aged 7 to 9 can join in❗️

*Explore The Ocean* is an engaging children’s educational picture book from by author ✍️ Anne Ameri-Siemens and illustrator 🎨

Together, they take young readers from the wave-tossed surface 🌊 of the seas right down into the dark and silent depths ⬇️.

It covers flora 🪸, fauna, climate, currents, people 👩‍✈️ and the impact they have on the world’s oceans.

Thanks to the detailed illustrations, which are full of things to discover 🧭, children (and adults too) will enjoy this book for a long time to come 😀.

Surf Shacks Vol. 3 continues the cult-favorite series 🤙 with a new lineup of creative surfers and the eclectic spaces they inhabit 🛖. From breezy cabins in California and artist-built hideaways in Hawaii 🌺 to design-forward retreats in Portugal and Panama, the book captures how surf culture extends far beyond the waves.

This third volume broadens the view 👀, spotlighting not only the individuals who live by the tide but also the designers and builders shaping tomorrow’s surf-centric dwellings. With its signature mix of documentary photography, intimate portraits, and cultural insight, Surf Shacks Vol. 3 is both a celebration and an evolution—tracing coastal life 🐠 at the intersection of architecture, creativity, and community.

The perfect addition to your coffeetable books collection.

We welcome our new ambassador .surf on board 🥳❗️ The young Russian Aksi Semenova lives in Bratislava 🇸🇰 and is completely passionate about rapid surfing.

„When surfing, I love the feeling of freedom on the wave... It’s like mastering the elements.”

Although she only discovered surfing at the age of 13, by 16 she was already a well-known name on the rapid surfing circuit. In 2025, she stood at the top of the podium 🥇 at Surf Jam Austria, the Russian Championship and the Moscow Championship. Chapeau 🎩!

And – hold on to your hats – she was the first woman to land a backside shove-it 🚀!

When she’s not winning medals on river waves and in wave pools, she relaxes by surfing in the open sea 🏄‍♀️.

“Since 2023, I’ve been surfing in the ocean. My first trip was to Bali. I fell in love with ocean surfing. As I continued to improve in deep-water surfing, I also learnt ocean surfing.”

We are more than excited to see where the journey with Aksi takes us 🤩.

Find out more about Aksi on our Ambassador page at www.rebel.surf or follow the link in our bio above.

Issue 35.2 of is out and, as always, takes us on an expert tour of the entire world of surfing 🚀.

We visit Californian publisher 📖 Tom Adler, experience adventures in Malibu 🌊 with Liard Hamilton, go island hopping from Honolulu to Hagatha 🏝️, lose ourselves in Steve Wilkins’ water shots from the 70s, visit tattoo artist Nathan Kostechko, and go surfing in Iceland 🧊.

The Surfer’s Journal is more of a book than a magazine; reader-supported 👓, it has been providing expert insights into the world of surfing since 1992 ✅
