Once again, grease-free-for-life bearings in there, and they've been exceptional.

These are 62 cm, compared to the 68 cm on the Tiger.

But two rows, and the beauty, the benefit of the HORSCH system compared to other speed disc machines, is the distance between here and here.

So, the distance between your front row and your back row of discs is very critical.

A lot of other machines, this distance is shorter.

So what happens when you get up to speed is your trash gets cut by the front discs and then thrown into your back discs.

Whereas with this distance here on the Joker HD, your residue is getting chopped and sized at the front.

It's actually falling down onto the ground, and then these rear discs are chopping it while it's on the ground.

So that distance is very critical, from your front discs to your back discs.

Yes, so the HORSCH Joker HD range. There are three different models in the Joker range.

You've got the CT, which is the three-point linkage model we'll see in a minute.

You've got the RT, which runs from 5 m to 12 m, and then you've got the Joker HD range, which runs from 6 m to 8 m.

With the HD, you can see the size of this arm here. Look, they're massive arms on the disc system.

And you've got one arm with two discs, which is really important because you've got this trash flow through here that's unimpeded by a disc arm.

So, a rubber torsion system here, 40 cm wide, giving you a very wide contact area for your torsion rubbers.

This is a 17-degree disc angle. They're very good for your trash flow and full cut-out.

As you remove these clips, each one lowers the working depth. For example, on a 4-metre machine, if you remove a blue clip that's 6 mm thick, there's a 4:1 ratio, so that gives you a 24 mm adjustment in working depth.

That's really important for getting your depth right and allowing the soil to flow smoothly through the machine, into the packer and then through the TopRing packer for a final finish.

As with most HORSCH machines, keeping transport width under 3 metres is critical. This 4-metre machine folds down to just 2.98 metres for transport.

The same applies to the 6-metre model, which also folds up for convenient transport.

This is what we call the TopRing packer. With the tyre packer, you’ll get a small mound of soil forming between each tyre. The TopRing packer runs directly in line with those mounds, levelling them off to provide a final finishing pass.

It’s all hydraulically controlled, so you can raise the rollers and lock them up or lower them into working position.

Another feature worth mentioning is that this machine can also be used as a speed tiller. We’ve got clients using them this way by raising the tines out of work.

I’ll show you how the tine depth is adjusted. You simply add or remove these depth clips here. The packer determines the working depth of the tines, so adjusting these clips allows you to set the depth you need.

That’s a major advantage. A lot of machines will only incorporate lime down to 5 to 10 cm, whereas this machine can get it down to 30 to 35 cm.

Being designed for maize, these machines can obviously handle a lot of crop residue, but we also use them extensively in the Australian cotton industry.

Cotton growers can save two, possibly three cultivation passes. They can come through, pick the cotton, mulch the residue and then run this machine through in a single pass.

It can rip down to depths of around 35 to 40 cm in cotton rows. Even in some conditions in Western Australia, we’ve operated at depths of approximately 40 cm.

We’ve got growers incorporating 2.5 to 3 tonnes of lime down to depths of 30 to 35 cm with these machines.

I’m not aware of another machine on the market that can incorporate that amount of lime throughout the soil profile down to 35 cm.

We’ve tested this using coloured rice. After running the machine through the soil, we’ve been able to find coloured rice distributed throughout the entire 35 cm profile.

We’ve also had clients with soil pH levels as low as 4.12 who have applied 2.5 to 3 tonnes of lime using this machine. When they’ve come back and tested the soil the following year, the pH has increased to around 5.5.

Then we come back to the levelling discs. These are depth-adjustable using the pin system here. You simply set the pin to the desired working depth.

The aim is to have the soil fairly level before the packer passes over it. The packer then reconsolidates the soil, helping to retain any moisture brought to the surface during cultivation and minimise moisture loss.

And this is the levelling disc system. Once again, any soil thrown out by the discs is brought back into the working area.

Moving back from the disc system, we come to the tine system. These tines are known as TerraGrip 3N, with a breakout force of 770 kg.

They feature a similar design, with edge plates, HM Plus points and twisted shank guards right across the machine, all designed to direct soil flow in a controlled way.

We’ve got a big, heavy-duty arm here with a substantial tapered roller bearing system. The bearings are greased for life, so there are no grease ni***es on this unit.

Inside, there’s a castellated nut. Over time, as the bearings wear in, even several years down the track, you can adjust this nut to take up any wear or movement that may develop in the bearings.
