🇺🇸 THE US MIDTERMS: WHY SHOULD AUSTRALIAN SCRAP MARKETS CARE?

Americans head to the polls on 3 November. The election won't set the copper price, but decisions on trade and tariffs can change where metals move, who can access them and what buyers are willing to pay.

Copper is the clearest example. US tariff expectations have encouraged large quantities of metal to accumulate in American warehouses, creating an unusual split between US and international markets.

If tariff policy changes, so could those flows and regional price premiums. Aluminium and steel may also feel the effects through trade rules, manufacturing competitiveness and downstream demand.

For Australian scrap sellers, the things to watch are practical:
• US copper tariff announcements and COMEX–LME differences
• AUD/USD movements
• Buyer demand, freight and actual downstream pricing

The point isn't to predict an election result, or a price rally. It's to understand how policy risk can move metal markets before supply and demand fundamentals have changed.

WHY IS CLEAN SCRAP WORTH MORE?

Two piles can contain the same metal and still have very different recycling values.

Clean, separated aluminium extrusion is easier to grade and direct to an appropriate downstream market than a mixed load containing attachments, different alloys and contamination.

It's race weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park, with Dean lining up in the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge Australia at the Shannons SpeedSeries LIQUI MOLY GT Festival Sydney.

Today was practice, tomorrow it's game on. 👊
