Acetone vapour smoothing ABS 3D prints at home, the simple way. Will your parts warp? At CNC3D we put it to the test on an ABS enclosure. 🧪

Plenty of people have talked about acetone smoothing and a lot of you are keen to try it. In this video, we show you a practical application: how it's done, plus a really simple setup you can build at home. 🏠

Our setup:
🔹 A food grade container with a glass base and a clip-on lid.
🔹 A bit of paper towel in the bottom, with just enough acetone to wet it.
🔹 A small stainless steel mesh on top of that.
🔹 Your parts resting on the mesh. Close the lid and let the vapour do the work.

The big worry is parts deforming and changing shape. This case needed to fit together well, so it was a proper test. Take a good look at the fit, then tell us what you think in the comments. 👀

Here's what we can definitely confirm: it's a really solid feeling case. Compared to a standard 3D print it feels more solid. Just tap it and it feels like a harder plastic all round. The idea is letting the layer lines bond together a little more deeply. 💪

Which materials suit it?
🔹 ABS: what we used here. Its higher temperature resistance makes it a great pick for parts that need to handle some heat.
🔹 ASA: this works as well, with better UV resistance for parts that live outdoors.
🔹 PLA and PETG: acetone generally won't smooth these, so check your filament before you start.

⚠️ Safety first: acetone is highly flammable and the fumes aren't good for you. Work somewhere well ventilated, well away from sparks, flames and heat. Keep that container for this job from then on, not for food.

It was a fun little project. We hope it inspires you to try improving the strength of your own parts. 🛠️

🛠️ Create your own custom CNC tool profiles with CNC3D Design Suite!

In this video, we show you just how easy it is to create a completely custom tool profile, giving you greater flexibility when setting up your tools and visualising your work inside CNC3D Design Suite. 🚀

While most CNC tools will typically fall into familiar categories such as V-bits, flat-bottom end mills and ball nose end mills, sometimes you have something a little different.

That is where custom tool profiles come in. 👌

You can define the dimensions and shape of your own tool, allowing CNC3D Design Suite to accurately represent it within the visualiser. This means you can get a much better picture of how your particular tool will interact with the job before you even get to the machine. 🖥️⚙️

In this video, we walk through the process and show just how quick and straightforward it is to create your own custom tool.

🔥 Turn ANY Image Into a 3D STL for CNC Carving, Completely FREE! 🔥

This is one of the coolest tools we’ve added to CNC3D Design Suite. You can now take an ordinary raster image such as a JPG, JPEG, PNG, BMP or TIFF and dynamically convert it into a real 3D STL model, then bring it straight into CNC3D Design Suite for further editing, CAD/CAM work and CNC carving. 🤯🛠️

That means a normal photograph or image can become the starting point for your own 3D relief carving.

🐶 In this video, we take a regular photo and show how CNC3D Design Suite interprets the image as height information to create a 3D relief. From there, you have a whole collection of tools to actually work with the model rather than simply accepting whatever the conversion gives you.

🧰 Built-in 3D Image Editing Tools

You can:

✂️ Select and isolate the background to remove it or flatten unwanted areas
🖌️ Use the Height Brush to manually raise or lower areas of your relief
🌊 Smooth rough areas and transitions
✨ Sharpen details that need more definition
🎈 Inflate areas to give features additional depth and volume
🪵 Apply textures to introduce different surface effects
📏 Control the relief dimensions and depth before creating your STL
👀 Preview the model in 3D while you work
💾 Save the finished model as an STL
⚡ Import it directly into your CNC3D project
