Singapore Case Study | Consistent Acoustic Performance For High-Density Residential Developments

The Marsiling Peak I & II development in Woodlands, Singapore, is the latest project in the Housing Development Board’s (HDB) ongoing public housing programme, aimed at delivering comfort-able, efficient, sustainable living spaces for Singapore residents.

As a high-density residential build, ensuring consistent acoustic performance throughout the building required an internal wall insulation system that could meet the high demands, while also supporting strict installation standards and on-site efficiency.

Enter Knauf Insulation Internal Partition Folded Batt 50mm x 16kg/m³.

Made custom for Singapore partitions, the Folded Batt comes pre-cut to standard wall heights and are designed to friction fit snuggly into the metal stud cavity in a single batt. Not only does this allow installers to simply fit the batt with no added measuring or trimming, but the friction fit additionally ensures consistent cavity coverage for improved acoustic performance.

Building a lower-carbon future starts with materials we choose today. 🏢

As the construction industry places greater focus on reducing embodied carbon across the full building life cycle, insulation materials play an important role in supporting more sustainable building design.

Knauf Insulation glasswool helps to deliver high-performance while addressing embodied carbon at every stage of the building life cycle, from manufacturing and installation to long-term building operation.

Delivering long-term moisture protection and fire safety for large-scale industrial metal roofing factories in Malaysia?...
21/05/2026

Delivering long-term moisture protection and fire safety for large-scale industrial metal roofing factories in Malaysia? Yes, we do that too.

Our Earthwool® Metal Roofing Roll (Unfaced) product was put to the test on our factory extension in Johor. Located in Malaysia’s hot, humid, rain-intensive tropical climate, the project required an insulation system that would limit rain impact noise, increase indoor comfort, and support exceptional thermal performance. Our glasswool insulation delivered this and more, due to its:
💡exceptional thermal and acoustic performance
💡Bomba Class ‘0’ fire-resistance certification
💡DriTherm® Technology, ensuring water-repellent performance when exposed to tropical hu-midity or incidental moisture.

📑 EPDs can be powerful tools when making informed decisions about material specification. However, knowing what to look for or where to begin can be quite overwhelming. With all of the technical information, standards, and life cycle details, it helps to know what really matters.

When reading an EPD for insulation products, here are the key areas to focus on:
✅ Product type: Is the EPD product-specific or does it cover multiple products?
✅ Standards compliance: Look for recognised standards like EN 15804+A2 or ISO 21930
✅ Validity and verification: An EPD must be third-party verified and published by a recognised Program Operator
✅ Functional unit & application: Compare products with the same R-value and intended use
✅ Life cycle stages: See which stages are included and the Global Warming Potential for embodied carbon
✅ Energy use, location, recycled content: Factors that influence environmental performance

At Knauf Insulation, all of our EPDs for glasswool insulation products are product-specific, third-party verified, and cover all life cycle stages. This enables you to accurately compare and understand the environmental impact of your choices.

Sustainability in construction extends beyond material selection itself - it also includes how products are delivered on-site.

Knauf Insulation glasswool utilises advanced compression packaging technology, allowing significantly more insulation to be transported per pack. This improves logistical efficiencies and reduces transport-related emissions, contributing to lower overall lifecycle carbon impact.

Smarter packaging can play an important role in reducing the environmental footprint of construction materials, contributing to better buildings.

🏷️ Choosing products with relevant EPDs for your project isn’t always easy. With different formats, standards, and life cycle scopes, making the right selection can feel more complicated than it should be.

To help make things clearer, here are a few checks that can make your EPD comparisons more efficient and quicker:

✔️ Look at the functional unit
A quantified performance measure that shows you the difference in impact per square metre of material. It can give you a meaningful comparison of products with the same application.
✔️ Compare R-value
The R-value measures the thermal resistance of insulation products. A higher R-value indicates better performance.
✔️ The same standard version?
EPDs based on EN 15804+A1 and EN 15804+A2 may look similar, but they’re not.
A2 introduced new impact categories and different units to represent categories that remained the same.
✔️ Check the life cycle scope
Some EPDs cover only manufacturing (A1-A3), while others include the full life cycle (A-C). The choice depends on what aspects of the product's environmental impact you want to evaluate.
And remember: Module D sits outside the main life cycle, so interpret it separately.

By keeping these points in mind, comparing EPDs becomes a lot more intuitive, making it easier to guarantee the sustainability of your projects.

🌱 Transparency is the foundation of sustainable construction.

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are third-party verified documents that report the environmental impact of a product throughout its life. They can help your every decision during construction be backed by facts, not assumptions.

Based on a Life Cycle Assessment - which evaluates everything that happens from making the materials to disposal or recycling - EPDs are like a nutrition label for sustainability. It tells you what’s the impact of your chosen insulation and how it affects the planet.

To make comparisons fair, EPDs for construction products have to follow specific standards:

✔️EN 15804 +A2: The standard for construction products
✔️ISO 21930: Global equivalent
✔️EN 16783:2017: Specific to thermal insulation products

At Knauf Insulation, our EPDs cover all requirements and life-cycle stages. But we also look at what happens after the product’s life. Recycling, reusing or recovering energy can help avoid environmental impact. EPDs help benefit a circular economy, and we are committed to creating products that not only serve today’s needs, but support tomorrow’s world.
