After planting, other herbicides can be used to control w**ds:

Basagran/Bentazone – controls broadleaf w**ds

Bateleur Gold – controls grasses and broadleaves

Buctril/Bromoxynil – post-emergent for broadleaf w**ds

Halosulfuron & Nicosulfuron – control grasses, broadleaves and yellow nutsedge

Stellar Star – post-emergent for annual grasses

For Conservation Tillage, Glyphosate (Roundup) is applied before or just after planting.

Pest control includes:

Carbaryl for stalkborer and armyworm

Dimethoate for leaf hoppers

Curaterr at planting for streak virus and hoppers

Diseases like grey leaf spot are managed using Propiconazole or Bavistin.

For storage, protect grain with Shumba Super, Actellic Gold, or Malathion dust to prevent storage pests.

Maize production needs about 25 kg of seed per hectare and a plant population of 50,000–55,000 plants/ha. Always do soil tests before planting. Maize often needs zinc, especially in sandy soils, so use zincated fertilizer or add zinc with herbicide sprays.

Different fertilizer options provide Nitrogen (N), Phosphate (P), Potash (K) and Sulphur (S). For topdressing, use Ammonium Nitrate (400 kg/ha) or Urea (300 kg/ha) to supply nitrogen for crop growth.

For w**d control at planting, farmers use herbicides such as:

Metolachlor 960 EC (controls grasses and some broadleaves)

Atrazine/Atranex (controls broadleaf w**ds)

Acetochlor 90 EC (pre-emergent control of grasses; used at 30–60 ml/knapsack)

These products help keep the field clean and improve crop yields.

The house you provide for your indigenous chickens is more than just a shelter; it's a vital part of ensuring their safety, health, and productivity.

A well-built and properly managed poultry house protects your birds from harsh weather conditions like heavy rain, strong winds, and extreme heat or cold. It also acts as a crucial barrier against predators such as wild animals and thieves, safeguarding your valuable flock.

Beyond protection, good housing provides a comfortable and hygienic environment that reduces stress on your chickens, minimizes the risk of disease outbreaks, and supports their natural behaviors.

Indigenous chickens, often referred to as "village chickens" or "roadrunners" in Zimbabwe, are a diverse group of birds that have adapted over centuries to the local environment, poor nutritional regimes, and common diseases. They are highly valued by rural and smallholder farmers for their hardiness and ability to thrive with minimal inputs, making them a sustainable choice for poultry production.
Unlike commercial breeds that require specialized feed and housing, indigenous chickens are excellent scavengers, finding much of their own food by foraging for insects, seeds, and plants. This reduces feed costs significantly.
They are also known for their natural resistance to many local diseases and parasites, which means lower veterinary expenses and fewer losses for farmers.

Land preparation is the process of readying soil for planting by clearing debris, plowing, harrowing, and leveling. It improves soil structure, drainage, and aeration, promoting seed germination and crop growth. Proper land preparation enhances nutrient availability, reduces w**ds, and prevents soil erosion, ensuring higher agricultural productivity.
