The most dangerous enemy of a solar system is not old age. It’s a thunderstorm.
Every rainy season reminds solar installers of one thing. Rain alone is rarely the problem. Thunder and lightning are.
A single thunderstorm has the potential to damage almost any part of a solar system. Solar panels, batteries, breakers, charge controllers, and most especially the inverter can all become victims.
This is why professional installers go the extra mile to protect every installation. We install lightning arresters, surge protective devices, proper earthing systems, fuses, and circuit breakers. These devices play a vital role in reducing damage caused by voltage surges and indirect lightning strikes.
But there is one truth many people do not know.
No protective device is designed to guarantee survival against a direct lightning strike. A direct strike carries enormous energy, enough to overwhelm protective devices and reach sensitive components like the inverter, the battery’s BMS, and other electronics.
In electrical engineering, current always seeks the path of least resistance to the ground. That is why the area where your inverter, batteries, and distribution board are installed is often the most vulnerable part of the entire system during a severe thunderstorm.
So what is one of the simplest forms of protection available to every homeowner?
The OFF button.
Whenever there is a heavy thunderstorm with intense lightning activity, switch off your inverter, breakers, and changeover switch if it is safe to do so. Disconnecting the system from incoming and outgoing circuits adds another layer of protection that no surge protector alone can provide.
As engineers, we do everything within our knowledge to design safe and reliable systems. But the longevity of your solar investment also depends on you. A few seconds spent switching off your system before a major storm could save you from hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of naira in repair or replacement costs.
