President Hichilema Champions Solar Innovation for Rural Agriculture at EIZ AGM in Livingstone
LIVINGSTONE— President Hakainde Hichilema has called for greater innovation in agricultural mechanisation, urging local industry players to develop solar-powered solutions to support Zambia’s rural farmers.
The President made the remarks on Saturday during a tour of the Camco Equipment exhibition stand at the ongoing Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) Annual General Meeting in Livingstone.
Accompanied by Eng. Wesley Kaluba, President Hichilema was received by Camco Equipment’s Regional Manager for Southern, Rickson Mabena. During the engagement, Mr. Mabena showcased key machinery aimed at boosting farm productivity, including the GM100 combine harvester, maize shellers, and Lovol tractors. He emphasized the company’s focus on advancing agricultural mechanisation across the country.
President Hichilema expressed appreciation for the technologies on display, noting their potential to transform yields and reduce post-harvest losses. He specifically challenged engineers and equipment manufacturers to innovate further by developing a solar-powered maize sheller.
“Such technology would enhance sustainability and directly empower our farmers in rural areas where access to electricity remains a challenge,” the President said.
The suggestion aligns with government’s broader push for climate-smart agriculture and renewable energy adoption. A solar maize sheller would allow small-scale farmers to process crops on-site without relying on diesel or grid power, cutting costs and improving efficiency during harvest season.
The EIZ Annual General Meeting brings together engineers, policymakers, and private sector players to discuss infrastructure, innovation, and industrial development. Camco Equipment is among several firms exhibiting machinery and engineering solutions at the event.
The AGM continues in Livingstone this week under the theme of engineering’s role in national development.
