60mm or 80mm interlocking paving?
The answer depends on what type of traffic your paving needs to handle.

60mm Interlocking Pavers:
A good choice for areas such as parking areas and other residential or commercial spaces with normal vehicle traffic.

80mm Interlocking Pavers:
Designed for more demanding areas where heavy or frequent vehicle traffic is expected, including trucks, forklifts and other heavy vehicles.

And don't forget: ensuring a properly prepared base and correct installation is essential for paving that performs well.

Make sure to choose your paving for how it will be used.

The right bedding sand, properly prepared and levelled, plays an important part in keeping your paving even and stable over time.
Another useful paving tip from the CMA and CMACS to help you get your paving project right from the start.

Paving Bedding Sand Layer

Once the supporting layer works have been correctly constructed and compacted, attention shifts to the bedding sand layer.

The bedding sand provides a uniform surface on which the concrete pavers are placed. It helps accommodate minor variations in paver thickness and assists with the correct seating and alignment of the paving units during installation and compaction.

The bedding material must be clean, suitable for purpose, and evenly graded. Unsuitable sand, excessive fines, contamination, or inconsistent material can affect drainage, compaction, and the long-term stability of the paved surface.

Bedding sand should be spread evenly over the prepared base and accurately screeded to the required level. It must form a consistent layer and should not be used to correct major irregularities, depressions, or level differences in the underlying base.

Only an area that can be paved within a reasonable period should be screeded. Once prepared, the bedding layer should remain undisturbed and must be protected from foot traffic, rain, contamination, and construction activity before the pavers are installed.

Care must also be taken not to overwork or prematurely compact the bedding sand before laying the pavers. Final seating occurs when the installed paving units are compacted into the bedding layer as part of the completed paving system.

A correctly prepared bedding sand layer contributes to an even finished surface, consistent support, effective load transfer, and the long-term performance of the concrete paving installation.

At the CMA and CMACS, we promote quality-assured products, recognised standards, and recommended construction practices for durable and cost-effective concrete paving.

Installing Pavers – Layer Works for Paving

Our next topic focuses on the importance of correctly constructed layer works when installing concrete pavers.

Following the selection of the appropriate paver, attention must be given to the supporting pavement structure. Even the highest-quality concrete paver cannot perform as intended if the underlying layers are poorly prepared, inadequately compacted, or unsuitable for the anticipated traffic conditions.

Layer works typically begin with the preparation of the subgrade, followed by the construction of the required subbase and base layers. The design and thickness of these layers will depend on factors such as ground conditions, drainage, anticipated traffic loads, and the intended use of the paved area.

Each layer must be constructed using suitable material, placed at the correct thickness and properly compacted. Soft spots, unstable material, poor drainage, and inconsistent levels should be addressed before the bedding sand and pavers are installed.

The finished base must provide a firm, even, and well-drained platform for the bedding layer. Bedding sand should not be used to correct major irregularities in the underlying layer works.

Correctly designed and constructed layer works provide the stability required to distribute loads, limit movement, and support the long-term performance of the complete paving system.

At the CMA and CMACS, we promote quality-assured products, recognised standards, and recommended construction practices for durable and cost-effective concrete paving.
