Condensate is a natural result of compressing and cooling air.

In an oil-lubricated compressed air system, that condensate can contain both water and oil. It should not be treated as ordinary clean water.

A properly designed condensate-management system may include:

Hours, load profile, temperatures, alarms, oil condition, ambient conditions and changes in performance can all reveal issues that a date on the calendar cannot.

Condition-led maintenance uses operating information to support better decisions:

• Is the compressor loading and unloading excessively?
• Are temperatures trending upwards?
• Has oil condition changed?
• Are filters creating additional restriction?
• Is the unit still delivering what the plant requires?
• Are repeated alarms pointing to a developing problem?

Installing a new compressor does not guarantee better pressure at the production line.

The distribution system still has to carry the air where it is needed.

Undersized pipework, unnecessary restrictions, long runs, poor routing and badly positioned equipment can create pressure losses between the compressor room and the point of use. The compressor may then be forced to operate at a higher pressure just to compensate for losses in the network.

That increases strain without fixing the real problem.

When compressed air performance drops, the compressor is often the first thing blamed.

But the compressor is only one part of a much larger system.

Air must be generated, cooled, stored, treated, distributed, controlled and delivered to the point of use. A weakness in any one of those stages can affect pressure stability, air quality, energy use and reliability.

That means a newer or larger compressor will not automatically solve:

• Poorly designed pipework
• Inadequate air storage
• Incorrect filtration or drying
• Condensate management problems
• Multiple compressors working inefficiently together
• Pressure losses between the compressor room and production
