Is your solar actually registered?
Most people we speak to in Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging and Sasolburg assume the answer is yes, because the system works. Working and registered are two different things.
Here is the part almost nobody is told. If your system is connected to the grid, it has to be registered with whoever supplies your electricity — even if it is set up never to export a single unit back. Eskom puts it plainly: households must register even if they do not export. Not exporting does not make a system off-grid. Only having no grid connection at all does that.
If Eskom supplies your property directly, registration turns on three documents:
• A Certificate of Compliance
• An inverter test certificate
• A test report for the installation
Eskom has also waived registration and connection fees, including a smart meter, until 30 September 2026.
If your municipality supplies you — as it does across much of Emfuleni — the process, the paperwork and the costs are the municipality's own, not Eskom's. Do not assume Eskom's document list, deadline or free meter applies to you. Ask your municipality directly.
One more thing worth knowing while you go looking. Your Certificate of Compliance has to actually include the solar. If your certificate was issued before your system went in, it does not cover it — the regulations treat a solar installation as an alteration to your electrical installation, and an alteration needs its own certificate. That matters again the day you sell: at transfer the certificate may not be older than two years, and it is the seller's obligation. Insurers commonly ask for a valid COC too.
