Did you know that the Westermo operating system (WeOS ) supports 802.1x port authentication?

Relying on a perimeter firewall to protect an industrial control system (ICS) is no longer considered to be enough. One problem with a perimeter firewall is that it still leaves the control system vulnerable to attack. Consider a small unmanned water pumping station with limited physical security. If the intruder can bypass the physical security, there is nothing to stop the intruder from connecting to the network and getting to work.

To make it more difficult for an intruder to attack an ICS network, cyber security controls should be extended to the edge of the network. This approach is often termed “Defence in Depth”. The Westermo operating system WeOS has support, as standard in all managed layer two and three devices, for the 802.1x port authentication protocol. The 802.1x protocol stands guard on the edge ports waiting for an attempted connection on a physical port. On detection of a switch port becoming active, the switch issues an 802.1x challenge to the connecting device. The edge port will only be allowed to forward packets to the network after the device has verified its credentials. Without the correct credentials, the port refuses ingress of any data into the network.

SERIAL TO FIBRE OVER A SINGLE FIBRE?

Did you know Westermo ODW serial to fibre modems support communications over a single fibre?

The Westermo ODW-730 series RS-485 fibre converters have been used in numerous Fire Panel and Building Management applications throughout Africa for many years.

Typically, communication over fibre requires two separate fibre cores for full duplex communications (required for RS-485). But in some applications there is only a single fibre available. This may be due to a broken fibre core or there is only one core left in a multicore cable. The ODW-7xx fibre modems can solve this issue when matched with a Westermo Bi-Directional (BiDi) transceiver.

The BiDi transceiver uses two different wavelengths of laser light. One in each direction to transmit and receive data simultaneously. The different wavelengths of light are in effect isolated from each other so it cannot cause interference or errors in the data flowing in each direction. The use of BiDi transceivers can save costly replacements or increase the number of data services over an existing fibre cable.

BiDi transceivers are also available for use with the Westermo Ethernet products as well.

Do industrial networks continue to utilize RS-232 and RS-485?

The answer to this one is most certainly yes. Even though Ethernet became the “go to” technology for industrial networking at the turn of the century it is amazing how much equipment with the old RS-232 or RS-485 ports are still in use. A problem we are starting to notice is that the younger engineers are not being taught about these old favourites and many of the old hands are now retiring. With this in mind I thought an article covering some of the basics of serial communications might be helpful.
RS-232

There was a time when every PC and peripheral had an RS-232 port either a 25 or 9 pin D-Sub. The RS-232 port also became standard on virtually every industrial PLC, drive and instrument sold in the 1990s.

The major problem most users would have was knowing whether the port on their equipment was configured as DTE (Data Terminal Equipment) or DCE (Data Communication Equipment). Broadly speaking most PCs ...
