We have plate, sheet, engineering steels, and cut-to-size sections available now from our Richards Bay yard.

Structural plate in S355, mild steel CQ plate and sheet, galvanised, abrasion resistant VRN400, 304 stainless, and engineering grades EN8, EN19AR, EN19T, and ST52 in black and bright bar.

No minimum order. No paying for a full length when you only need half of it. We cut to your size and get it out the door.

We built a braai for our Friday wors braais.

We didn't plan to sell it.

Every Friday at North Coast Steel, someone lights a fire. It's been that way for most of our 30 years in Richards Bay.

A few months ago we built a proper braai for it. 304 stainless. 4mm plate firebox. The same material we supply to food processing plants, coastal infrastructure, and industrial operations across KZN.

Customers started asking about it. Then asking again. Then asking if they could buy one.

So we built a few more.

There is a business lesson in there somewhere about the products that find you rather than the ones you go looking for.

But mostly I think it is just a good braai.

Two models. R6 850 and R10 950 incl. VAT.

Built in Richards Bay from material we stock and cut ourselves.

No imported 3CR12 frames that rust after two seasons. No 1mm sheet metal that warps over a fire.

That was 1996. And that promise has never changed.

Your supplier just called. They are out of stock.

It is 3:42pm on a Thursday and your site cannot stop. You need 12 lengths of 300WA angle iron cut to length before tomorrow morning or the crew stands around watching concrete cure with nothing to weld.

This happened yesterday. A Richards Bay contractor called. Site at Alton. Steel supplier in Durban had nothing. We had stock. We pulled the material, cut 12 lengths to spec on the bandsaw, loaded the bakkie and delivered by 17:10. Site kept moving Friday morning.

No drama. No overtime stories. Just stock on the floor and a saw that runs until the last order is done.

When your project timeline depends on someone answering the phone after 3pm, you need a supplier who stocks deep and cuts fast.

3 reasons we talk weldability before you order — not after you’ve cut the plate.

When a client calls with “I need 12mm plate for a pressure vessel repair,” our first question isn’t price. It’s application.

Because S355 welds cleanly with standard E7018 low-hydrogen electrodes. AR450 wear plate is a different story. In KZN mining and construction it’s often supplied as Hardox 450, and it needs preheat of 150°C to 200°C depending on plate thickness, low-hydrogen electrodes, and controlled slow cooling. Skip that process and you’re looking at hydrogen-induced cracking in the hours and days after welding.

High-carbon tool steels like D2 are a different problem altogether. Welding them without specialist procedures is asking for trouble. Extensive preheat, controlled interpass temperatures, post-weld heat treatment. Most experienced fabricators avoid welding D2 entirely and find another way to join it.
We’ve seen too many failed repairs come through the door. Cracked welds, brittle joints, fabrications that had to be scrapped. Usually not because the grade was cheap. Because nobody asked the right questions before the order was placed.

We stock what works. We document what doesn’t. And we’ll tell you straight if what you’re asking for is going to cause problems downstream.

That’s the difference between supplying steel and knowing steel.

Here's what most KZN workshop owners miss when ordering structural steel.

It's a small detail on the mill cert that can put your workshop on the hook for a weld failure you didn't cause.

Your client specifies S355J2+N on the drawing. Your supplier delivers "S355 compliant" stock. Are they the same? Not always.

The "+N" matters. It's a normalised rolling condition that affects impact toughness at low temperatures — critical for outdoor structures in KZN winters or high-stress welded assemblies.

If the mill cert just says "S355" without the condition suffix, you've technically supplied off-spec material. Most jobs, no issue. But if there's a structural query or weld failure later, you're the one who signed off on fabrication.
