"Clean air isn't just filtered air."
There's a difference between compressed air and breathable air, and it's not a small one.

Standard compressed air can contain oil vapour, carbon monoxide, excess humidity, and CO₂ at levels that are invisible, odourless, and potentially dangerous under pressure. Breathing it is not an option.

Breathing air must meet EN 12021:2014, the European standard for compressed air used in respiratory protective devices, covering applications from diving to firefighting to industrial SCBA systems.

The standard defines strict limits:
✔️CO must be kept as low as possible
✔️CO₂ cannot exceed 500 ml/m³
✔️oil mist no more than 0.5 mg/m³
✔️ air must be free from any significant odour or taste.

Achieving these levels requires the right compressor, the right filtration system, and the right maintenance cycle.

I nearly walked past the one thing that could have killed a diver.

We were out with a new electronic air tester, doing nothing fancy. Just randomly checking people's air quality on the trip. One shop had just had their machine serviced, so I almost skipped it. Freshly serviced, why bother.

We tested it anyway. Very, very high levels of carbon monoxide.

Here's the part that stayed with me. The company that did the service had quoted synthetic oil. They didn't use it. Non-synthetic oil slips past the rings, gets into the compression cycle, and produces carbon monoxide.

Nobody would have known. CO binds to haemoglobin hundreds of times more readily than oxygen, and by the time symptoms show up underwater, a diver is already in serious trouble. The owner had a paid invoice that said the job was done properly. His divers were breathing that air.

Without the test, this doesn't get caught. Ever. Until someone gets hurt.

That's what bothers me about buying a service purely on price, or trusting a paper quote. The corner someone cuts to win your job on cost is the corner that invariably fails at the worst time, when a diver is 18 metres down and can't taste what's wrong.

So a straight question for anyone filling their own tanks: have you ever actually tested the air coming out of your machine?

Most people haven't.

They assume the servicing company did what they charged for. Sometimes they did. Sometimes there's cheap oil in a machine that was quoted synthetic, and the only way you'll ever find out is a tester and someone willing to point it at your unit for no reason at all.

This is exactly why I carry the kit and check. Not because I expect a problem. Because I've seen what turns up when nobody's checking.

Test your air. Then test it again after every service.

The gas that can kill you underwater has no smell, no taste, and no warning. You'd never know it was in your tank.

Carbon monoxide poisoning in diving is rare. It's also fatal when it happens.

CO is colourless, tasteless, non-irritating. You won't smell it, you won't taste it, and it's produced by the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons. In the United States it's the most common cause of death by poisoning. Trace amounts sit in the air we all breathe. The trouble starts when abnormally high amounts get pushed into a scuba tank.

The Diver's Alert Network reviewed 451 recreational diving fatalities in the US between 1993 and 1997. They pulled autopsy reports and toxicology where they could. Carboxyhaemoglobin levels were measured in 67 of those cases, roughly 15%. That's real data, not a scare story.

So here's the practical side, because this is preventable.

If you run a petrol or diesel powered compressor, position the air inlet to pull in clean air. Sounds obvious. It gets overlooked constantly.

Fit a filter with a CO catalyst, which converts harmful CO into less harmful CO2. Then change that filter on schedule.

A clogged filter isn't doing its job, no matter how good it looked when you installed it.

Run the machine on synthetic oil and change it at the recommended intervals. Oil is cheap. The alternative isn't.

One question I'll leave you with. Have you ever actually tested the quality of the air coming out of your compressor?

Most people assume it's fine because it always has been. Assumption is exactly how the rare, fatal thing gets its opening.

A yacht builder came to us with a problem he'd already paid for twice over.

His previous supplier had been fitting compressors with cheaply sourced motors, improperly wound, and they were quietly destroying the vessel's inverters. Each repair cost tens of thousands of rands. And when the failures happened at sea, there was no service support within reach.
