An emergency doesn’t wait for an ambulance — and when severe bleeding occurs, the first few minutes are critical.

In 2025, South Africa recorded 11,418 road fatalities — around 31 deaths every day. South Africa also historically records more than 100,000 serious road-traffic injuries each year.
Trauma isn’t limited to our roads. A 2025 study found stabbing was the most common traumatic event, accounting for 32.63% of cases, followed by gunshot wounds and assaults. Another 2025 study highlighted South Africa’s significant burden of penetrating trauma, with trauma rates estimated at 5–9 times the global average.

So where does an IFAK fit in?
An Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) provides immediate access to critical trauma equipment while professional help is on the way, such as:
• Tourniquets – for life-threatening limb bleeding
• Haemostatic gauze – to help control severe bleeding
• Pressure dressings – for wound compression
• Chest seals – for certain penetrating chest injuries
An IFAK isn’t a replacement for professional medical care — it’s about buying time.
Having the right equipment immediately available, together with the training to use it correctly, can give you the ability to provide potentially lifesaving first aid before help arrives.

Be prepared. Carry the equipment. Know how to use it.
