Our climate resilience director Karen King highlights a sobering reality: in just six months of 2025, flooding has claimed at least 130 lives and left tens of thousands homeless across South Africa.

The solution lies in strategic planning, using digital tools and nature-based approaches. Just like we helped Santam Insurance develop comprehensive flood models to mitigate risk in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, we can transform how South Africa manages water risks.

Inspired by the Room for the River flood-management programme in the Netherlands, we believe we can work with nature, not against it, to protect our communities and the economy.
