🧱 GOOD CONCRETE DOESN'T HAPPEN BY ACCIDENT

Concrete may look simple once it's finished.

But getting a quality structural concrete element starts well before the concrete truck arrives.

From reinforcement and formwork to placement, workmanship and curing, there are multiple factors that can influence the quality and long-term performance of concrete.

🏗️ BEFORE THE CONCRETE IS POURED

What you see before a concrete pour can be just as important as the concrete itself.

Inside this formwork is reinforcement steel, or rebar, which is carefully positioned to provide the tensile strength a concrete structural element needs.

Before concrete is poured, engineers inspect details such as:

🔩 Reinforcement placement
Checking that the correct reinforcement is positioned according to the structural design.

📐 Spacing & detailing
Ensuring bars, ties and other reinforcement are correctly arranged.

🧱 Concrete cover
Maintaining the required distance between the reinforcement and formwork helps protect the steel from corrosion and contributes to the long-term durability of the structure.

🔍 Overall workmanship
Making sure the construction is ready for the next stage before the reinforcement disappears beneath the concrete.

Once the concrete is poured, you can't simply look inside and check what's happening.

That's why getting the details right before the pour matters.

Featured in Landscape SA, Issue 160 (2025), Menlyn Mix is an urban hospitality development in Pretoria's Menlyn precinct, bringing together accommodation, business, recreation and landscaped spaces within a mixed-use environment.

Conic Consulting Engineers was proud to contribute to the project as the civil and structural engineering consultants, working alongside the wider professional team to help bring the development from concept through to a completed, functional space.
