The wrong screwdriver strips the screw, and a five-minute fix becomes an afternoon. ๐Ÿช›

It usually starts with a cupboard door hanging off one hinge. You grab the one screwdriver in the house, it nearly fits, and it slips. Two turns later the head of the screw is chewed round. Now it won't go in and it won't come out, and the whole afternoon goes on one screw.

A screwdriver has one job: fill the head of the screw. A ๐—ณ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜ tip goes into a single slot, a ๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜€-๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ tip into a cross, and both come in more than one size. Too small and it spins inside the head. Too big and it never sits down. The right one drops in snug and turns the screw, not the metal around it.

Spanners work the same way. One size too big, and a spanner slips over the corners of the nut until they are round.

Next time, ๐—ฝ๐˜‚๐˜ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜„ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐˜ before you leave home. Take it with you when you buy a screwdriver, and match its shape and width to the tip before you choose.

Match the tip first, and a five-minute fix stays a five-minute fix. ๐Ÿ”ง

That black line along the bath edge is water getting in behind the seal. ๐Ÿ›

Old sealant shrinks, cracks and lifts away from the tiles. After that, every bath pushes a little more water into the gap, and it soaks in behind where you can't see it.

Most people squeeze a fresh line straight over the top. It looks neat for a while, then it peels, because The old line has to come out first. One Saturday morning does it:

Cut it out. Run a utility knife along both edges of the old sealant, peel it away, then scrape off what's left.
Dry it right through. Wipe the joint clean and give it time, because new sealant needs a clean, dry joint to grip properly.
Tape both sides. Masking tape along the bath and along the tiles, with a neat gap between.
Run one bead. A steady line of silicone sealant from the caulking gun, smoothed off, then pull the tape while it's still wet.

Then leave it alone for as long as the tube says before anyone runs the next bath.

Silicone sealant, a caulking gun, a utility knife and masking tape: ๐—•๐˜‚๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฑ ๐—ถ๐˜ ๐——๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐˜‚, Daku Square, Kwazakhele, Gqeberha.

Fence, frame or workbench: it all starts with the right wood. ๐Ÿชต

Start with the job in your head, not a list of wood, and the wood sorts itself into three.

๐—ฃ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€ are for the jobs that stand up out of the ground: fence posts, the uprights of a washing line, the legs of a shade frame.

๐—•๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜€ are the light, straight pieces that tie a job together: the rails between fence posts, the frame that holds shade cloth, the skeleton under a bench.

๐—ฃ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ธ๐˜€ are the wide, flat boards you work on and put things on: a workbench top, a shelf for the paint tins, a step at the back door.

So a fence is poles and battens. A shade frame is poles first, then battens. A workbench is battens under a plank top.

Pick the job first, and the wood follows. ๐Ÿ”จ

Short one row of blocks means a second trip and a wall that waits. ๐Ÿงฑ

Most walls come up short for one reason: the blocks were counted by eye. A pile always looks bigger in the yard than it does in the wall.

So count on paper before you come in. Grab a tape measure. ๐Ÿ“

Measure the length of the wall, then measure one block with its mortar joint. The length divided by that gives you the blocks in one row. Do the same with the height to get the number of rows. Then:

Take off the blocks that a door or window leaves out, then add a few extra for cuts and the odd broken one.

Don't stop at blocks. Every joint takes mortar, and mortar takes ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ and sand. Put the bags on the same paper, so you are not halfway up the wall when the mix runs out.

Bring the paper with you. One count at the kitchen table saves the second trip, and the wall keeps going up.

A door that doesn't fit is a door you buy twice. ๐Ÿšช

It's a wet weekend in Gqeberha, with rain all Saturday morning, so give the indoors the job most people rush: measuring for a new door. A doorway is hardly ever square. Walls settle, plaster goes on thicker in one corner, and an old frame leaves rough edges when it comes out. Measure once in the middle and the new door can still catch at the top.

So measure it five times. Across the opening ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐˜€: top, middle and bottom. Up the opening ๐˜๐˜„๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ: left side and right side. Write every number down and keep ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜ of each, because the door has to fit the tightest spot. Then measure how thick the wall is, so the new frame sits right on both sides. ๐Ÿ“

Fold the paper into your pocket and bring it with you. And bring a second pair of hands, because it takes two people to carry a door.

New paint, same crack. Roll fresh colour over a crack and it shows straight back through. Paint changes the colour, not the crack. ๐Ÿ

Paint is the easy part. Prep is what makes it last, so do two checks first. The ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—บ ๐˜๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜: rub your hand on the old paint. White powder on your palm means wash, dry and prime first, or the new coat will not grip. The ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜: press masking tape down hard and rip it off. Flakes on the tape mean that paint comes off.

Scrape back to firm paint. Rake out each crack and brush out the dust. Press filler in with a filler knife, let it dry, sand it flush, then prime every bare patch.

Spring is the season for it: longer, warmer days, so each step dries properly before the next. Pick a dry, calm morning, because Gqeberha wind blows dust straight onto wet primer.

One warning: a crack wider than a pencil, or one running at an angle from the corner of a window or door, can mean the wall is moving. Get that one checked before you fill it.

Filler, sandpaper, scrapers and primer are waiting at Daku Square, Kwazakhele, and once the wall is ready, we tint your colour in store. ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ

Prep it once, paint it once. ๐—•๐˜‚๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฑ ๐—ถ๐˜ ๐——๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐˜‚, yes we can.
