Coega Steels, established in 2014, is a leading South African steel-billets manufacturer and the first and only steel-melting unit in the Eastern Cape province. Its billets, produced from high-quality ferrous scrap at its state-of-the-art mini-mill in Gqeberha, are the product of choice for 75 rolling mills locally and internationally. Its team of 600 employees is projected to grow to over 800 in

2026 through strategic forward integration. Looking further ahead, the workforce is expected to expand to approximately 900 staffers as it expands into finished-product manufacturing for the domestic market. The Coega Steels workforce is at the heart of its sustainability strategy. Through the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, it strives to create a greener, cleaner and better future for staff and the local community. The mini-mill’s vision is to be the leading industrial enterprise in the province.

TEAM EFFORT | Transforming South Africa's steel industry requires buy-in from a range of stakeholders.

The recent completion of the Eastern Cape's largest hybrid solar farm at Coega Steels's plant in Gqeberha is a great example of what can be achieved when the business sector bands together.

In this instance, Emergent Energy EC collaborated with the Coega Development Corporation to access local labour and equipment needed to build the infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Huawei South Africa supplied the transformers and inverters needed for the conversion process while Matriarch Asset Managers conducts regular inspections, implements preventative maintenance and provides monthly reports on savings.

And, just like that, we have a party of [at least] five to help reduce the country's carbon footprint.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE | Installing solar power extends beyond mere environmental advantages into the realm of those who live in it.

The world is not only sensitive to industrial progress and evolvement but also to economic balance, which inevitably involves people.

The short version of this ideology is forging an environment where businesses can be profitable to (a) secure current employment opportunities and (b) grow to create more.

We believe investing in renewable energy is a step in that direction.

On a micro level, it provides additional stability for our workforce of around 600 people while, from a macro perspective, it grows the economy and creates jobs.

A win for us is indeed a victory for industry and therefore the economy.

The new hybrid (rooftop and ground) solar system commissioned by Coega Steels adds just over 7MW of additional energy capacity at the plant in Nelson Mandela Bay – the equivalent of supplying 3 500 to 7 000 residential homes with power.

Now imagine what is possible if we can all play our part.

ENORMITY OF SCALE | Mention solar power and people inevitably ask for comparisons of scale.

Coega Steels recently finalised the second phase of its extensive, long-term solar project to upgrade its generating capacity to just under 8MW.

So how much is that?

If you consider that the average household consumes between one and 2kW of electricity per hour, 1MW will electrify anywhere from 500 to 1 000 homes for the same period. Now let's times that by eight and we have 4 000 to 8 000 dwellings.

Another interesting equation is that Coega Steels's total energy needs per annum will be around 180GW following its planned, future expansion. The objective is to source 20 per cent of this by way of solar technology, which means 36GW.

Using the same formula, this means supplying between 90 and 180-million houses with electricity.

POWER STEERING | Statistics from the International Energy Agency (IEA) indicate that total global energy investment in 2025 amounted to some $3.3-trillion, two-thirds of which flowed into clean-energy technologies like renewables, electric vehicles and fuels.

This is a clear indication in what direction the world is moving.

Coega Steels, a leading player in the hashtag revolution in South Africa, is at the forefront in the uptake of renewables in this country.

It recently unveiled a 7.08MW solar installation (3.91 rooftop and 3.17 ground array) at its plant in Gqeberha, proving why Africa will not be a bit-part player in the transition to purer power for much longer.

BASKING IN SOLAR | Coega Steels's investment in the Eastern Cape’s largest commercial solar installation at its Gqeberha plant represents a major shift towards lower carbon production processes in South Africa.

The project has been developed in partnership with Emergent Energy Eastern Cape and Huawei South Africa and comprises 11 484 solar panels and 23 inverters delivering 7MW of power.

Mini-mills like Coega Steels already emit up to five times less carbon than primary-steel producers by recycling scrap metal through induction and electric-arc methods rather than the traditional way of burning fossil fuels.

This, ongoing, project will help reduce the company's carbon footprint just that little bit more.

Anything to help the sustainability shoe fit, right?

STEELING A MARCH | Countries like India, Vietnam and South Africa may be classified as developing nations but their steel industries are emerging as global leaders in the transition to renewables.

The former's JSW Steel operates a colossal 225MW captive solar plant while Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel, Vietnam's largest steel producer, is building a rooftop solar installation that will deliver 80MW once complete.

At the tip of Africa, Coega Steels in Gqeberha has installed a system with a total capacity of 7.08MW, making it the largest of its kind in the Eastern Cape.

The next phase will account for an additional 20MW as the manufacturer aims to push its capacity to around 28MW (including the previously-installed rooftop installation) in the short term.

It should also be remembered that the Nelson Mandela Bay plant is categorised as a mini-mill, which not only uses "cleaner" technologies than its Asian counterparts in its manufacturing processes but also far less energy to do so.

The Global South is definitely securing its place in the sun as the world turns to .

POWER FOR HOURS | Unreliable electricity supply is the bane of any business and it takes an especially harsh toll on the steel-manufacturing industry.

Millions of rand can be lost when power outages affect manufacturers' production capacity - even for a day.

Prolonged shutdowns inevitably result in job losses.

This is why secondary steel producers are integrating renewable energy sources like solar or wind power into their operations.

At Coega Steels, for example, we were able to access just under 1MW of power through our rooftop solar installations in 2025.

With our new plant coming online this year, we can draw up to seven.

The system comprises 11 484 solar panels and 23 inverters, making it a mega solution when the grid fails.

GOAL-GETTERS | Number 17 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals call-to-action aims to build support networks between developed and developing countries.

The UN is clear that the only way sustainable development initiatives will thrive is for countries to work together.

A recent visit by a student delegation from the Czech Republic to Nelson Mandela Bay steel producer Coega Steels illustrated the benefits of such collaboration, particularly for young professionals preparing to enter the global workforce.

QUIETLY EXTRAORDINARY | Noise pollution has been described as the "unseen crisis".

According to the World Health Organisation it is considered one of the most harmful environmental factors in large industrial cities, alongside waste, air and water pollution.

Hearing loss and anxiety are not uncommon among humans while exorbitant decibels can also disturb wildlife, disrupting their breeding, feeding and communication patterns.

As a producer, Coega Steels takes this very seriously.

Unlike the notoriously-loudmouthed coal-fired furnaces, electricity is used for the melting process instead the burning of fossil fuels.

This makes operations far, far quieter. Imagine switching from a diesel-powered big-rig to an electric sedan.
