Week after week, bags of cement, bricks and tins of paint leave the store in car boots and on the backs of bakkies. Then they disappear into homes across Motherwell, and we hardly ever see what they became.

The boundary wall that went up straight. The step at the back door that nobody trips on anymore. The room the kids painted over the holidays. The shelf that is still up.

Every extra room starts as four pegs and a string line in the yard. 📐

From there it goes up in three phases: foundation, walls, roof. Give each phase one rule, and don't let the next phase start until this one is done.

𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝟭, the foundation: square before you dig. With the pegs set to the room's side lengths, measure the room corner to corner, both ways. When the two diagonals match, the corners are square. Then get it level, because every wall that goes up will carry whatever this phase gets wrong.

𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝟮, the walls: corners first. Build each corner up a few courses, stretch a builder's line between them, and lay every course in between to that line. Keep the spirit level on each course as you go, so the wall stays straight and upright all the way to the top.

𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝟯 is the roof, and it comes last.

Built this way, the room can rest between phases and carry on straight and square when you are ready for the next one.

Which door in your house slams all night? 🚪

The 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱 is back in Motherwell, and every house has one door that hears about it first. Maybe it's the kitchen door that bangs shut every time somebody opens the front. Maybe it's the bedroom door that swings closed by itself, or the window that knocks against its frame until somebody gets up to sort it out.

Every house has the same argument about it, too. Somebody left it open. No, it was the wind. And by now there is a half brick or a folded bit of cardboard parked against it, doing a job it was never made for.

Paying for the bricks is the easy part. 🧱

Every builder in Motherwell knows the moment. The money is ready, the list is written, the bricks and cement are paid for, and then somebody asks the real question: how is all of this getting home?

The cousin with the bakkie is at work. The hired bakkie wants its cash before the engine starts. And the wheelbarrow was never going to carry a pallet of bricks down the road.

That rubble pile won't move itself. This weekend, it goes. 🪨

Most yards have one. The broken bricks from the last build, a cement bag that went hard, old tiles and offcuts, parked in the corner since the builders left. Grass grows through it, and every month it looks more permanent.

Spring is when it finally goes. The cold has lifted, the days are longer, and the yard is about to become the place everybody wants to be again.

Work it into three heaps. Whole bricks and blocks stacked neatly, because they are still good for the next job. Broken pieces barrowed together into one tidy pile. Everything light bagged as you go, then a rake through the grass for the small bits. Gloves on the whole time, because rubble hides sharp edges and old nails.

By Sunday afternoon, the corner you have walked around for a year is a yard you can use again.

Whatever the job still needs, from a 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄, spade and rake to gloves and 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗴𝘀, pick it up at 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗸𝗲, Zonke Plaza, Motherwell, Gqeberha, before Saturday.

Today is the dry one. If the weekend's rain showed you a wet patch under a window, go outside and find where it got in.

Stand under that window and look at the joint where the frame meets the wall. A crack, a gap, or old seal that has gone hard and pulled away is the door the water used.

Here is the job, done from the ground:
1. Scrape out the old, cracked seal and anything loose in the gap.
2. Brush the joint clean and let the morning sun dry it right out. A new seal will not grip a wet or dusty joint.
3. Run one even bead of 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 all the way round the frame, pressing it into the gap, then smooth it the way the pack shows.
4. Leave it to set for as long as the pack says before the next rain comes.

Ground-floor windows only. An upstairs window is not a one-person ladder job.

Roller, not remote. 🎨
These 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀, the TV loses to a tin of paint.

Let them pick the colour for their own room first. That one choice gets them off the couch faster than any amount of asking. Then the furniture goes to the middle, old sheets go down, and everybody gets a roller. The smallest one takes the wall behind the door, where nobody checks. The eldest insists on the edge along the ceiling and ends the day with paint in their hair.

Most holiday days blur into the same screen. The day you painted a bedroom together does not. Years from now they will still point at that wall and tell visitors which part was theirs, and nobody will dare draw on it.

Rain from tonight right through Saturday. Let it show you where your house lets water in. 🔦

The forecast for Gqeberha has heavy rain from late tonight, carrying on through Saturday and into Sunday morning. On a dry day a leak hides. When it rains, it gives itself away.

So while you are indoors this weekend, walk every room with a 𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹. Run the torch along the ceiling, and wherever you see a wet patch or a fresh drip mark, draw a pencil circle around its edge and write the date next to it. Next time it rains, one look tells you if the wet has spread past your line. Check the walls under the windows too, and look from the door for water standing against the outside wall.

Two rules while you do it. Stay off the roof and off the ladder while it is wet and windy. And if water comes through near a light or a plug, keep clear of it and get an electrician to look.
