Building the foundations of the built environment.

Civil engineering is often the work you don't see, but it is what makes everything else possible.

From roads, stormwater and bulk infrastructure to urban development, sport and recreation facilities, our Civil Engineering Department brings almost 40 years of experience to projects across the built environment.

Leading the department is Michael Smuts, Pr.Eng, a Professional Engineer registered with ECSA and a member of SAICE and IMESA.
Michael's journey into civil engineering started early. Growing up accompanying his land-surveyor father to construction sites, he found himself surrounded by engineers from a young age. After graduating from Stellenbosch University, he began his career at the same consulting engineering firm where his father worked.

In 2004, Michael joined forces with Wouter Engelbrecht to establish NWE Consulting Engineers. Today, that practice has evolved into NWE Built Environment Consultants, bringing together engineering, architecture, quantity surveying and project management.

Michael specialises in urban and bulk civil infrastructure, sport and recreation facilities, development risk analysis and financial feasibility modelling. He is also passionate about mentoring the next generation of engineers and sharing the experience gained throughout his career.

Good engineering doesn't just support a project. It helps make the project possible.
And with our multidisciplinary approach, we're excited to keep building what comes next.

House Aurora | Gordon’s Bay

House Aurora is a residential renovation and extension project for a couple looking
to transform their existing home in Gordon’s Bay into a contemporary coastal
residence.

The design works with the existing house while introducing a new architectural
language, centered around a bold mono-pitch roof form. Rather than simply replacing
the existing roof, the new roof becomes an opportunity to reshape the character of
the home, introduce greater volume and improve the relationship between the
interior spaces, natural light and the surrounding landscape.

The proposed design opens the home towards its coastal setting, while creating a
stronger connection between the living, entertainment and private spaces. Clean
geometric forms are balanced with warmer timber elements and carefully framed
views, giving the house a contemporary character without losing its sense of home.

For us, the project is less about starting from scratch and more about reimagining
what is already there transforming an existing house into a home that better reflects
the couple who will live in it.

House Woolley | Hout Bay

We’re proud to be working alongside Sayer Architects on House Woolley, an exciting residential project situated on a sloped site with panoramic views over Hout Bay.

Our scope includes the structural engineering and stormwater management design, supporting an architectural vision that combines exposed timber-grain off-shutter concrete, steel-framed roof structures and carefully integrated stormwater solutions.

Projects like this rely on close collaboration between architects, engineers and construction teams to ensure that ambitious design concepts can be successfully realised on site.

A special thanks to Godwin Projects for their exceptional craftsmanship and for bringing the drawings and details to life.

We look forward to seeing House Woolley continue to take shape.

Transforming an existing freestanding house into luxury apartments requires careful coordination between architecture, engineering and construction.

For this project in Camps Bay, NWE Built Environment Consultants (NWE BEC) provided the MEP and Fire Engineering services, working closely with Ansara Architecture, Sutherland Engineers and Custom Design Construction.

From the technical systems behind the scenes to the fire safety requirements that protect the building and its occupants, our role was to help bring together the various disciplines required to deliver a high-end residential development.

We’re proud to have contributed to the transformation of this property into a contemporary luxury living environment.

Transforming The Exchange for a more reliable, efficient future.

NWE Built Environment Consultants is proud to be contributing to the revitalization of Inospace Exchange at 15 Lower Long Street, Cape Town, a landmark commercial building being transformed into a modern mixed-use development.

Our electrical engineering work is focused on modernizing the building’s infrastructure and improving long-term performance, reliability and energy efficiency.

The project includes comprehensive electrical upgrades throughout the building, including:

• Energy-efficient LED lighting systems
• Upgraded electrical distribution boards and network infrastructure
• Medium-voltage transformer inspections and maintenance
• Rooftop backup generator installation
• A 50 kW hybrid inverter and lithium battery storage system
• Power supplies for HVAC and tenant services
• Emergency lighting, CCTV and access control systems

By combining practical engineering solutions with modern energy technologies, NWE is helping create an electrical infrastructure capable of supporting the building’s evolving commercial needs.

Engineering today for the buildings of tomorrow.

Delft Soccer Field Now Complete — Built to Play in Any Weather

We're excited to share the completion of a full-size, 11-a-side synthetic soccer field in Delft, Cape Town, delivered for the City of Cape Town.

Designed with community access in mind, the field features a permeable base with subsoil drainage — ensuring the pitch remains playable throughout the rainy season, when many grass fields would otherwise be unusable. The addition of floodlighting extends playing hours, giving local players, schools, and clubs more time and flexibility to use the space.

This project came together through strong collaboration:
Construction by Martin & East / Game On JV
Synthetic turf supplied and installed by Belgotex Sport

Facilities like this make a real difference — giving communities safe, reliable, all-weather spaces to play the game they love. We're proud to have played a part in bringing it to life.

We've expanded our services — and we have a new name to match.

NWE Consulting Engineers is now NWE Built Environment Consultants.

Over the years we've grown well beyond our original engineering scope, and our new identity reflects that: a multidisciplinary consultancy offering a complete range of built environment services under one roof.

Alongside our established engineering disciplines, we now offer Architecture and Quantity Surveying, joining our Civil, Structural, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering teams.

What that means for you is simpler: fewer consultants to coordinate, fewer gaps between disciplines, and one integrated team delivering practical, well-considered solutions from concept through to completion.

Same people. Same standards. A broader offering.

One team. One vision. One trusted built environment partner.

Engineering is evolving faster than ever — and one innovation is turning heads across the global construction industry.

Popular Science recently named Superwood by InventWood its Grand Award Winner in Engineering for 2025. The material, developed by researcher Liangbing Hu, is stronger than steel and six times lighter — made not in a blast furnace, but from treated wood fibres compressed at the nanoscale.

For South Africa, this matters. Steel production is one of the largest contributors to industrial carbon emissions globally, and our construction sector faces mounting pressure to build smarter, greener, and more cost-effectively. A material that sequesters carbon instead of generating it — while matching steel's structural performance — could be a genuine game-changer for infrastructure development across the continent.

InventWood (inventwood.com) is already taking reservations. The question for South African engineers, architects, and developers is: are we watching this space?
