Record crops in South Africa and Zambia are pushing maize prices down across much of Southern Africa. 🌽

But “maize is cheap” is only true until you ask: where?

In South Africa, wholesale prices recently fell to their lowest levels in years. Zambia is also seeing sharply lower prices after a record crop.

Yet transport, local availability and market access are producing a very different picture elsewhere. Even within Zimbabwe, maize in deficit areas can cost considerably more than in surplus-producing regions.

For a miller, the regional price is useful context. The delivered price at your own mill is the number that matters.
Benchmark locally before you budget.

The best insect screen is the one you stop noticing. 🦟

Fresh air still moves through the room. You can still see outside. But mosquitoes, flies and other nuisance insects stay where they belong.
The detail that makes the difference is the mesh itself.

Aperture controls how small an insect can pass through. Wire diameter affects strength and durability. And 304 stainless steel gives you a screen that can handle African weather without the rust problems of ordinary steel.

For homes, farm offices, stores and work areas, it is a small barrier that works every day without sprays or plug-ins.

Worn roller flutes rarely fail all at once. They cost you gradually. 🔧

Extraction starts drifting down. Power use for the same tonnage creeps up. Meal quality becomes less consistent. And operators often compensate by tightening the roll gap instead of fixing the real problem.

Those are all signs worth watching.

Roff reflutes break and reduction rollers, including rollers from selected other makes, up to 1.5 metres long.

If your mill data is telling you the rollers are no longer doing the job they used to, don’t wait for a breakdown.

A good harvest does not guarantee a good supply position six months later. 🌽

Maize keeps changing after it comes off the field. Moisture moves. Heat builds in the middle of a heap before it shows on the outside. Insects arrive in grain that looked clean going in.

So storage is more than putting maize under cover. Clean the store and check for insects before you fill. Watch moisture closely, because it affects many of the other storage risks. Then inspect on a schedule, not when you notice something.

This year’s crop gives millers a chance to secure supply while availability is comfortable. Storage lets you hold that position — but only if the grain is still fit to mill when you need it.

Fortification is one of the few public-health interventions that happens inside a mill. 🌾

Across Africa, adding essential vitamins and minerals to staple foods such as maize meal can help address micronutrient deficiencies without changing what people eat every day.

For millers, the operational part is straightforward: the premix has to be added accurately and consistently. Poor dosing, or premix that has degraded in storage, can mean paying for fortification without delivering the intended nutritional benefit.

That makes fortification more than a compliance requirement. It is a small step in the milling process with a much bigger role in the final product.

Spoiled maize meal is product you already paid to make. 📦

Shelf life starts before the bag reaches the storeroom.

Moisture should ideally be around 12–13% and not exceed 14%. Heat speeds up spoilage and nutrient loss. High humidity encourages mould. And whole maize meal generally has a shorter shelf life because more of the natural oils from the germ remain in the product.

There’s another risk with fortified meal: it can still look and smell acceptable while added nutrients have already degraded below the required level.

So don’t judge shelf life by the date alone. Control the meal, the packaging and the storeroom.

One ton a day. That's where Kamunu Milling started — a single Roff SP-1, and a founder who'd been told he wouldn't make it. 🌽

Today Kamunu holds around 80% of the Namibian market, runs 24/7 and is scaling toward 100 tons a day.

The machine gave Kamunu the capacity to grow. The business was built by understanding what Namibians wanted their meal to taste like, pricing it fairly, and refusing to compromise on quality.

Twenty-five years of that, compounded.

Maize is more than a crop. Across Africa, it feeds families, supports livelihoods and keeps local businesses moving. 🌽

Behind every bag of maize meal is a chain of decisions — when to invest, when to grow, how to improve quality, and how to build a milling business that can last.

That’s where Roff comes in.

From first-time millers to established commercial operations, we work with entrepreneurs to turn maize into opportunity — with the equipment, experience and support to help them keep moving forward.

A strong harvest. A less certain season ahead. 🌍

Southern Africa has just come off an excellent maize season. South Africa took off a record 17.4 million tons against annual demand of about 12 million. Zambia had its largest crop ever at 4.9 million.

But the region isn't one market. Zimbabwe's prices have eased since the harvest. Malawi's are well above average and still rising. Mozambique and Angola are both stretched.

An El Niño event is under way and expected to strengthen as the rains start in October.

The region has grain now. What happens next season may be much less even.

There is no single African maize meal market. 🌽

In South Africa, customers know super and special. In Zambia, breakfast meal and super roller meal are common. Kenya has Grade 1 sifted. Angola has fuba. Tanzania has sembe and dona.

Different names, different textures, different extraction rates — and different expectations from the customer.

So before you choose a maize mill, start with your market: what maize meal do people already buy, and what do they expect it to look and taste like?

Know what your customers want. Then choose the right milling machine.
