Let's get back the Knysna ChooTjoe
Media Statement:
Restore the Rail, Bring Back the ChooTjoe
Knysna Unite is advocating for the restoration of the railway between Knysna and George, along with the reinstatement of the iconic ChooTjoe train service. This call comes amidst Knysna's current sanitation and refuse removal crisis, where the placement of waste facilities near the waterfront has raised questions.
Historically, Knysna's waste management relied on the railway, with daily transportation of waste, timber, and goods to Mossel Bay facilitated by the ChooTjoe train. This service not only provided essential logistical support but also served as a significant tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world.
The devastating impact of the 2006 storm, which damaged the railway and led to the ChooTjoe's retirement to the Railway Museum in George, severely affected Knysna's tourism industry. Despite various attempts to revive the service, challenges such as cost constraints and apparent disinterest from Transnet have persisted.
Recognizing the economic and environmental benefits of rail transport, Knysna Unite emphasizes the urgency of restoring the railway and resuming the ChooTjoe's operations. By leveraging rail transport for waste management, the municipality can address its refuse crisis cost-effectively while revitalizing the local economy and generating employment opportunities.
Knysna Unite is committed to prioritizing the restoration of the ChooTjoe alongside other community initiatives, such as securing water tanks for underserved households. Engagements with the Presidency, as well as National and Provincial governments, are underway to advance these objectives collaboratively.
Together, we advocate for the revival of the ChooTjoe and the restoration of Knysna's railway, ensuring a sustainable future for our community and preserving the heritage of this iconic steam train.
