𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗸 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀
The construction of the solar photovoltaic (PV) plant at the Great Brak River Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) is now fully underway, an exciting highlight as South Africa observes National Water Week (16-20 March 2026). This renewable energy project is aimed at strengthening the reliability and resilience of essential water and wastewater services serving the Greater Mossel Bay area.

This project forms part of Phase 2 of the Municipality’s renewable energy rollout. Once completed, the facility will consist of a 2.4 megawatt peak (MWp) solar photovoltaic system, paired with a 2.4 megavolt ampere (MVA) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

The latest update in construction is the offloading of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) units at both the Great Brak River WWTW and the Little Brak River Water Treatment Works, marking another important step forward in the delivery of the Great Brak PV solar project.

The system has been specifically designed to improve the reliability of electricity supply to three critical municipal facilities:
• Great Brak River Wastewater Treatment Works
• Klein Brak River Water Treatment Works
• Sandhoogte Water Treatment Works

By incorporating battery storage and reducing reliance on the national electricity grid, the installation will support operational continuity during power outages and periods of electricity instability, ensuring uninterrupted water purification and wastewater treatment.

This project therefore plays a key role in strengthening water security, protecting critical infrastructure, and improving service resilience for communities served by these facilities.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲
The project cost has previously been communicated and remains transparent. The total project value is R142 944 968.63 (including VAT). Council approved this funding during the 2022 and 2023 load shedding crisis, recognising the urgent need to protect critical water and wastewater infrastructure from the impacts of ongoing electricity interruptions.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀
The Municipality’s investment in renewable energy has already demonstrated measurable benefits. The Hartenbos Solar Plant, which is now fully operational, is reaping significant savings to the Mossel Bay Municipality in reduced Eskom electricity purchases. It is anticipated that the Great Brak River solar installation will deliver similar monthly savings, while further enhancing energy security for essential services.
