While exercise won't cure varicose veins, it can help improve your symptoms and reduce your risk of developing more. Getting active like walking, biking and swimming are all great low-impact exercises that are easy on the joints and can help with circulation in varicose veins.

So make sure you are getting active.

As you age your risk of developing varicose veins significantly increases. The older we get, the valves in our veins become weaker and less effective, just like any other part of our body. When Menopause hits, so do hormonal changes (in addition to aging) which can exacerbate or initiate problems with your circulation, leading to varicose veins.

During menopause, your estrogen levels significantly decrease, which does a few things to add to varicose vein risk. First of all, estrogen helps you control your body weight. When your estrogen levels decrease, your body has a harder time burning fat, putting more pressure on your veins and arteries. Secondly, estrogen helps your circulatory system; when this drops, it can contribute to weakening of your valves and the health of your veins. Lastly, when your estrogen decreases, other hormones in your body increase (ex. testosterone, insulin, etc.) which can cause the veins to soften and break down.

However, there are treatments available to treat varicose veins which we at Merlin Med do excel in. If you wish for more info please feel free to contact us directly on 0824161255 or 0764129024

Some ways to try prevent varicose Veins

1. Exercise. Get moving. Walking is a great way to encourage blood flow in the legs. Your health care provider can recommend an appropriate activity level for you.

2. Manage weight. Shedding excess pounds takes unnecessary pressure off the veins.
Avoid salt. Follow a low-salt diet to prevent swelling caused from water retention.

3. Choose proper footwear. Avoid high heels. Low-heeled shoes work calf muscles more, which is better for your veins.

4. Avoid tight clothing. Don't wear tight clothes around your waist, legs or groin because these garments can reduce blood flow.

5. Raise the legs. To improve the blood flow in the legs, take several short breaks daily to raise the legs above the level of the heart. For example, lie down with the legs resting on three or four pillows.

6. Avoid long periods of sitting or standing. Change your position frequently to encourage blood flow.
