Engineering QS vs Commercial QS – What’s the Difference?
Quantity Surveying is a diverse field, and one of the most important distinctions is between the Engineering Quantity Surveyor and the Commercial Quantity Surveyor. Understanding the difference is key to managing risk, cost, and value across different types of projects.
Engineering QS
• Specialises in infrastructure, civil, mechanical, electrical, and mining projects
• Works closely with engineers to manage technically complex systems
• Focuses on compliance, precision, and accurate quantification of specialised works
• Involved in projects like roads, bridges, pipelines, processing plants, and mining infrastructure
Commercial QS
• Focused on building projects: residential, commercial, and industrial
• Drives cost planning, tendering, procurement, and financial management
• Ensures contractual and commercial success throughout the project lifecycle
• Typical projects include offices, retail developments, housing, and warehousing
At Bruco Group, we’re proud to say we deliver both. Our team is equipped with the expertise to operate in technically demanding engineering environments, as well as commercially driven building projects.
From mines to malls, pipelines to penthouses – we’ve got it covered.
