Winter doesn't ask permission. It kills these 3 parts first.

1. Your battery — it loses about a third of its strength at freezing, right when your engine needs more power to start. If yours is 3+ years old, get it tested before the first cold snap.
2. Your tires — pressure drops about 1 PSI for every 10 degrees colder, and worn tread has nothing to grip on frost.
3. Your coolant — the wrong mix can freeze, expand, and crack the block. That's the expensive one.

Your brakes are the one system you never want to learn about the hard way. 7 mistakes that wear them out fast — or worse:

𝟏. Riding the brakes downhill. They overheat and fade — use a lower gear instead.
𝟐. Ignoring the squeal. That's the wear indicator telling you the pads are thin.
𝟑. Driving on a grinding sound. Metal on metal chews the rotor — a cheap pad job becomes an expensive one.

Your battery can look fine today—and leave you stranded tomorrow. Before colder weather arrives, do this quick check: with the engine off, look for corrosion around the terminals, make sure the clamps do not twist by hand, and check the battery date sticker. If you have a multimeter, a fully rested battery is usually around 12.6 volts; a much lower reading deserves a proper load test. Never lean over a damaged or leaking battery.
