Choosing the right electrode is not always as simple as choosing the right number on the box.

The application, material, welding position and required result all need to be considered before you specify what goes into the job.

That is where product knowledge matters.

At Mearon Engineering Supplies, our team can help you work through the options and find an electrode suited to the application, whether you already know what you need or need help making the right selection.

Have a specification you want us to help with? Send it to our team.

When you are buying welding consumables, the lowest price per kilogram is not the whole decision.

Afrox Vitemax is designed for general mild steel work in all positions, including vertical down. Afrox describes it as having a smooth arc, good striking and restriking, low spatter and slag that generally lifts away easily.

For the person buying it, the important question is not simply 'How much is it?'
It is: 'Is this the right electrode for the job?'

Tell us the material and joint and we will help you choose the product.

Mearon Engineering Supplies has now been in business for 28 years.

Peter Vogelpath started the company in 1998 after 17 years at Afrox, and the business today is led by Jason Vogelpath as Director.

A lot has changed in 28 years. Products have changed. Ordering has changed.

Customers expect answers faster. Procurement teams have more information in front of them than ever before.

But the basic questions at the counter have not changed much: What are you working on? What does the job require? When do you need it? What will work properly?

That is still how we approach supply. Start with the application, understand the requirement, then work back to the product.

You check the weather because of the job site, not the weekend.

You've got an opinion on which brand of glove actually lasts. You can tell what's wrong with a machine by the sound it's making before anyone opens it up. You know exactly which supplier answers the phone properly.

If any of that sounds familiar, you know exactly what this industry is actually like day to day. What would you add to the list?

The blade that's been cutting a bit slower than it should for two weeks.

The cable that sparks slightly if you move it a certain way. The part that's been making a noise nobody's quite gotten around to checking.

None of these get reported, because none of them have stopped anything yet. Then one day they do, usually at the worst possible time, and everyone acts surprised.

The warning was there the whole time. It just wasn't loud enough to notice until it was.

Notice something worth replacing before it becomes a breakdown? We can help you get ahead of it.

A full stock room and an organised one are not the same thing. Full just means there's stock.

Organised means anyone on the team can find what they need without asking, know what's running low before it runs out, and get back to the actual job in under a minute. It's not about having more.

It's about knowing exactly where everything is and staying one step ahead of what's about to run out.

Need help planning your stock levels? We work with clients on exactly this.

Every workshop has one. Not the loudest person in the room, usually the quietest one.

The one people find before they call anyone else when something doesn't look right, because they've seen it before, and they know what it usually means.

That kind of knowledge doesn't come from a manual. It comes from years of getting hands on with the actual problem, not the theory of it. We back that kind of experience, because it's what stops small issues from becoming expensive ones.

Who's that person on your team? Tag them in this post.

The market is tighter. Margins are under more pressure. And avoidable mistakes cost more than they used to.

So what does that mean for how businesses should be buying?

In his latest article, Mearon General Manager Mike Pollock-Vogelpath, looks at the current state of South Africa’s metals and engineering sector and what it means for procurement, supplier reliability and keeping operations running when every margin matters.

Because in a difficult market, the cheapest option is not always the lowest-cost option.

It's an easy trap. Two products, same category, one slightly cheaper, so that's the one that goes in the trolley. Then it fails halfway through the job, or wears out in half the time, and the job gets redone anyway, this time with the delay and the frustration added on top.

The cheaper option only wins if it actually finishes the job. If it doesn't, the real cost was never the price on the shelf. It was the time spent doing the work twice.

Ask us before you buy on price alone. We'll tell you straight if it's the right call.
