Now there's no excuse for being invisible on AIS. The RS-109M is the easiest, cheapest AIS transmitter. Just turn it on and tie it to your boat, or carry it in your PFD.
Works as a stand alone device with it's own battery, great to keep as a spare emergency AIS transmitter. Works when you need it most and when your built-in AIS fails: during dismasting, house battery failure, flooding, fire, capsize, you can even take it in the life raft with you!

Paddling round Robben Island requires crossing the TSS. It is comforting to know that ships, boats and Cape Town Port Control can see you on their MFD plotters.

Imagine being talking clearly to our amazing coast watching Cape Town Radio as if they were in the boat with you! Or to your paddle buddies. Or that fishing boat near you, or the NSRI boat searching for you.
Imagine knowing that your paddling buddies are safe, even when you have lost sight of them, because they would be able to call you if they got into trouble.
Imagine being able to tell them when you want to change your route, or being able to explain where you are when they are looking for you.
Imagine if they could get your exact GPS coordinates by sending a DSC position request to your radio.
Imagine if Cape Town Radio, or the NSRI, could see your position on their displays by sending you a polling request.

Every vessel Category D and up is required to carry a marine VHF radio. Does it make sense for paddlers to do the same when they operate in the same area in much more vulnerable craft?

Cape Town showing off the most amazing paddling conditions on Good Friday!

We decided this calles for an extended paddle from Hout Bay to Llandudno and back. The beauty of being in this remote and raw environment is unparalleled and we could not resist extending the paddle to include Oudekraal.

With the AIS transmitter in the back of my PFD we were clearly visible of the MFD chart plotters of surrounding vessels and on Cape Town Radio. The network of MarineTraffic shore stations is growing fast and the station at NSRI station 8 Hout Bay did a great job of uploading our positions to the internet, even from the remote areas behind Karbonkelberg!

We called Cape Town Radio for a radio check and could talk to them loud and clear as if they were in the boat with us.

Very reassuring to hear NSRI Rescue 2 Bakoven launching for exercises and talking to them clearly, thank you, true heroes!

We tested the new stand-alone AIS transmitter. Now every vessel can have AIS and show up on plotters of surrounding vessels and shore stations. With a 2 week battery life, this AIS locator can be strapped to your boat, jet ski or even slipped into the back pocket of your PFD and you will always be easy to locate for safe navigation or rescue operations.

Spring paddle down to Cape Point.
Beautiful paddling conditions with quite large swell from the Atlantic side as we passed the shelter of the Point. Blissful day.
Happy to have our radio with us to be able to call on the assistance of nearby ski boats if needed, and wonderful to have Ski Boat Mobile on standby on CH 71 to monitor traffic around Cape Point, thanks guys, precious!
