Insulating Glass Spacers — The Backbone of Every Double-Glazed Unit

The concept of the insulating glass unit is older than most people realise. In 1865, New York engineer Thomas D. Stetson was granted US Patent No. 49,167 for a hermetically sealed double pane — two sheets of glass separated by wood or rope and sealed with tar. It was a simple but ingenious idea. The spacer, in its most primitive form, was born.

Modern insulating glass spacers have come a long way. Today they are precision-engineered components that play a critical role in every IGU — directly influencing the thermal performance, durability and service life of the unit.

The spacer bar is the internal frame of the IGU. It determines the cavity depth (air space size), houses the desiccant, and provides the bonding surface for sealants. The thermal performance of the unit is influenced not only by the air space size but also by heat transfer at the glass edge through the spacer itself.
