Structural Silicone Glazing (SSG) — also known as flush glazing — is a system of bonding glass to a curtain wall’s structural framing members. Structural silicone is not simply a sealant — it is part of the structural load path of the curtain wall.

A Double-Glazed Unit is Only as Effective as its Components 🪟

In our previous post we explored the benefits of double glazing for Africa's climate — improved energy efficiency, solar control, indoor comfort and reduced operating costs. But those benefits can only be realised when the insulating glass unit (IGU) is manufactured from the right combination of quality components.

Every IGU is a carefully engineered assembly — two or more panes of glass separated by a desiccant-filled spacer, with the cavity filled with dehydrated air or an inert gas, and hermetically sealed around the perimeter. Each core component performs a critical function, each must meet the required performance standards, and each should be sourced from a trusted, specialised supplier.

The performance and longevity of an IGU depends on a combination of factors — including manufacturing process and installation — but it starts with correct specification and component quality. Unsuitable, inferior or incompatible components significantly increase the risk of premature unit failure. A quality IGU from a reputable glass processor should carry a minimum 10-year warranty. If it doesn't, it's worth asking why.
