The Saldanha Science Centre was alive with excitement as it hosted its annual Robotics Competition, bringing together creative young learners from eight primary schools across the local education circuit. Teams programmed LEGO Spike Prime robots to complete challenging tasks on a set course, testing coding, analysis, fault-finding and precision under pressure.

The atmosphere was filled with energy as learners showed teamwork, problem-solving and perseverance. After two close rounds, Diazville Primary School’s Grade 7 team claimed first place, earning praise for their creativity and determination.

The competition forms part of the Saldanha Science Centre’s Robotics and Coding Programme, which develops vital skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and digital literacy particularly among schools with limited access to robotics education.

Sincere thanks go to the independent judges from community organisations who ensured fairness throughout the event. Special recognition is given to Ms Siphosethu “Dudu” Legoabe, the Centre’s Robotics Facilitator, whose dedication and hands-on guidance have inspired many learners. The Science Centre staff also played an essential role in the day’s success.

The Centre extends gratitude to its generous sponsors, including Saldanha Bay Municipality, Pick n Pay Vredenburg and Langebaan, Cartol, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), and Food Lover’s Market. Their continued support strengthens the mission to broaden access to STEM education and prepare learners for a technology-driven future.

The ArcelorMittal Foundation’s Saldanha Science Centre continues to inspire young minds through its Early Childhood Development (ECD) and Foundation Phase Programme. During a recent visit to Hilly’s Millies ECD Centre in Louwville, Vredenburg, the Science Centre team introduced learners to early STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) concepts in a fun, hands-on ways.

Learners engaged in mathematical counting activities using colourful beads, discovering numbers, shapes, and sequences while improving fine-motor coordination. Each playful exercise helped build confidence, teamwork, and early problem-solving skills, sparking curiosity and creativity in the classroom.

The teacher was guided on how to weave these simple STEM principles into everyday learning, ensuring that discovery and curiosity remain central to their teaching approach.

This initiative forms part of the Science Centre’s mission to lay strong foundations in science and mathematics from the earliest years, empowering the next generation of thinkers and innovators across the West Coast.

The ArcelorMittal Foundation Saldanha Science Centre recently hosted its 4th annual career expo at the Saldanha Bay Multi-Purpose Centre, marking another milestone in the Centre’s mission to empower young people through education and career awareness.

Now recognised as the largest career expo on the West Coast, the event drew 55 exhibitors and collaborators, providing an interactive space for learners to connect with leading institutions and industries.

Using a rotational model, more than 450 learners had the opportunity to visit and engage with five exhibition sectors, gaining insight into diverse career paths in science, engineering, business, and higher education.

“The positive feedback from schools has been phenomenal. Educators commended the professionalism and planning behind the event. Proof of what can be achieved when collaboration drives a shared purpose.” - Xavier Lawrence, Science Centre Manager.

This year’s success would not have been possible without the incredible support of partners including the Saldanha Bay Municipality, Western Cape Education Department, University of Cape Town, Tronox, Lerole Power, Umoya Energy, Aurora Wind Power, Aquarius Mogs, Freeport Saldanha, and the South African National Petroleum Company (SANPC).

Special thanks to Amanda Lesch, the Science Centre’s event coordinator and the entire Science Centre team, whose dedication and attention to detail ensured that every aspect of the event ran smoothly.

The 2025 career expo once again reaffirmed the Science Centre’s role as a beacon of opportunity, partnership, and innovation in the Saldanha Bay region, shaping young futures and strengthening community ties.
