ENGINEERING A NEW COMMUNITY LODGE AT ADDO ELEPHANT NATIONAL PARK!

As shared by Minister David Maynier below, upgrades at Addo Elephant National Park are well underway. We are proud to have completed the civil and electrical engineering design for the Lendlovu Community Lodge at Addo Elephant National Park, on behalf of South African National Parks (SANParks).

Located about 1.7km from the park's main entrance, the lodge will provide 20 family accommodation units, with the first phase of 10 units now designed. Our design covers the full infrastructure package: a block-paved internal road network, stormwater management, potable and reclaimed water reticulation with fire protection, a gravity sewer network, and underground electrical reticulation with outdoor lighting. Every element was designed to sit lightly within one of South Africa's most treasured conservation landscapes, giving visitors a comfortable base from which to experience the Eastern Cape's wildlife. ENGINEERING A LASTING REPAIR ON THE SALT RIVER.

On 16 October 2026, Lukhozi Consulting Engineers handed over the reinstated 31 m section of the Salt River canal wall to the City of Cape Town.

The repair had to work alongside the existing channel structure. The new reinforced concrete wall is tied into the original base slabs and walls. Permanent propping and kickers give it lateral stability, and groundwater drainage relieves pressure behind the wall. Before the design started, we collected the existing reports, LiDAR survey data, as-built services information and hydraulic models. A geotechnical investigation by Gondwana Geo Solutions then informed the design.

We were proud to carry the project from design through contract administration and construction supervision. The work was built by the Boshard Zanmig Qabani Joint Venture under Term Tender Contract 194C/2020/21.

CLEANER RIVERS START WITH SMARTER DESIGN

What if clearing a litter trap never meant stepping into the river? That question shaped a new sliding gantry screen concept developed by Lukhozi Consulting Engineers as part of the City of Cape Town's Multipurpose Interceptor Study.

The screen hangs from an overhead gantry spanning the channel and catches litter as the river flows through. When it is time to clean, a maintenance vehicle hitches onto the screen and tows it along the beam to a hardstanding area, where the trapped litter is removed. The same hitch slides it back into place, so the full cycle from retraction to reset is carried out safely from dry ground.

Safer, simpler maintenance means screens are cleared more regularly, and every piece of litter caught upstream is one less reaching our wetlands, beaches and ocean.

Small design choices like this add up to healthier rivers and cleaner communities.

We are seeking a highly experienced professional who can lead structural engineering projects from planning and design through to contract administration and completion, while supporting and mentoring our technical team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
• Planning, design and contract administration of building and engineering projects
• Preparing engineering calculations, specifications, tender documents and technical reports
• Leading project teams of engineers, designers and draughtspersons
• Reviewing and quality-checking technical deliverables
• Structural condition assessments and reporting
• Contract administration and management of structural works
• Leading site and technical meetings
• Resource planning and management within the Structural Department
• Mentoring candidate engineers and technologists
• Supporting business development for the Structural Department

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on Structural Engineering
• Registered with ECSA as a Professional Engineer or Professional Engineering Technologist
• Minimum 10 years’ verifiable post-registration experience
• Strong understanding of engineering design codes and technical standards
• Experience managing design teams and delivering projects on time and within budget
• Proficiency in Master Series or Prokon, Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project
• Valid Driver’s Licence and own vehicle

Experience in the design of bulk water reservoirs, water treatment works, stormwater infrastructure, water-retaining structures, reinforced concrete structures and steel-framed structures will be advantageous.

Experience with ACC Docs, ACC Build, Revit and AutoCAD will also be advantageous.

Construction is well underway on the additional depot facilities at the City of Cape Town's Engineering and Asset Management Blomtuin Depot, where Lukhozi Consulting Engineers is proud to serve as Professional Services Provider and Principal Agent.

JOB DESCRIPTION
· Planning, design and contract administration of engineering and building projects from inception to completion.

REQUIREMENTS

· At least 2 years’ verifiable post-registration experience in planning, design and contract administration of building and engineering projects.
· Experience in bulk water reservoirs, water treatment works, stormwater infrastructure, water-retaining structures, reinforced concrete and steel-framed structures will be advantageous.
· Experience managing design teams and producing high-quality calculations, drawings, schedules and reports on time and within budget.
· Strong understanding of engineering codes and technical standards.

· BIM experience, particularly ACC Docs, ACC Build, Revit and AutoCAD, will be advantageous.
