Ever felt a cold draught around your ankles and had no idea where it was coming from?

Chances are it’s the gap under a door. It looks small, but it lets in cold air, noise, dust, light and even insects. You’ve probably lived with one for years without a second thought.

A door seal closes that gap. Some are fixed to the door, and others drop down automatically as the door closes, then lift again as it opens, so nothing drags on the floor. The result is a warmer, quieter, cleaner room, and you barely notice the seal at all.

“Coastal grade” sounds reassuring. But how is it actually proven?

Salt spray testing places hardware samples in a sealed chamber filled with a fine, constant salt fog. They stay there for a set number of hours, then get inspected for corrosion. Common standards for this include ISO 9227 and ASTM B117. The longer a finish lasts before corrosion appears, the better it performs.

One thing worth knowing: the hours aren’t a direct promise of years in the real world. The test is a controlled way to compare finishes and materials against each other. It’s a strong guide for specifiers, especially near the coast, but it works best alongside the right material, finish and maintenance.
