IEEE UCT is excited to launch the IEEE STEM HARVEST Challenge⚡️!

🎯 What’s the Challenge?

A LEctenna uses a Schottky diode connected to an LED to convert and visualize harvested electromagnetic energy from a mobile phone’s Wi-Fi antenna.

• Record: 14 LEDs lit simultaneously

• Your Goal: Light at least 14 LEDs simultaneously using a mobile phone!

🏆 Prizes & Showcase:

• Cash Prizes: Total pool of ~6,000 ZAR for top 3 teams.

• IEEE RADIO 2026: First 3 teams to light >14 LEDs get invited to present live at IEEE RADIO 2026 (Oct 26–29)!

Last Friday, we had the pleasure of hosting a technical seminar presented by the IEEE Circuits and Systems (CAS) Society.

A big thank you to Dr Shadrick Mambo and Muthomi Waweru, who represented IEEE CAS and delivered an engaging and insightful presentation. They introduced students to the society and highlighted its role in advancing research and innovation in circuit design, systems engineering, and signal processing.

The seminar provided students with valuable insights into the opportunities available through IEEE CAS, from technical development to professional networking, while showcasing the impact of these fields on modern technology.

It was fantastic to see such a high level of student engagement throughout the session, with thoughtful discussions and enthusiastic participation. We sincerely appreciate IEEE CAS for sharing their expertise and inspiring the next generation of engineers.

🔧⚡ Site Visit | Peralex — Bergvliet, Cape Town
On Friday, 23 May, the UCT IEEE Student Branch had the privilege of visiting Peralex — one of South Africa's most innovative electronic engineering companies, right here in Cape Town.

Founded in 1987 by two UCT graduate engineers who wanted to challenge a market dominated by big companies, Peralex was built on a more personal, intricate and acumen-driven approach to engineering. Today, they work on the cutting edge of electronics innovation, including Radio Digital Signal Processing (DSP), developing electronic systems with analogue front ends and sophisticated high-level software. Their work spans incredible fields — from radio astronomy and passive radar (PCL) to machine learning, radio transceivers, and bespoke solutions in acoustics, sonar, medicine and radar.

During the visit, the Peralex team took us through their design process from the ground up. We had the opportunity to speak directly with engineers about their projects and the kind of work they do day-to-day, and to hear first-hand what it really means to be an engineer in industry beyond the textbooks and lecture halls.
It was a rare and genuinely eye-opening experience for our members, and a powerful reminder of what we're working towards.
A massive thank you to the entire team at Peralex for opening your doors to us and investing your time in the next generation of engineers. 🙏 We are truly grateful.

The IEEE IAS–IPCSD Engineering Student Chapter Design Contest 2026 (Africa) is now accepting proposals. This competition recognizes innovative student projects that deliver practical engineering solutions aligned with the scope of the IEEE IAS

• Teams of 4–6 current IEEE student members
• At least one member from an IEEE IAS Student Chapter

IEEE UCT Opening Event 2026 ⚡

On Friday, the IEEE UCT Student Chapter hosted our Opening Event for 2026, bringing together students, lecturers, researchers, and industry professionals for an evening of insightful talks and meaningful engagement.

The event highlighted the opportunities available through IEEE for students interested in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, and Computer Science, while creating a space for learning, networking, and inspiration.

All of whom delivered engaging, insightful, and informative presentations about their companies, careers, and research.

🍕 Following the talks, attendees enjoyed a slice (or two) of pizza while chatting and networking with speakers, asking follow-up questions, and connecting with fellow students.

A big thank you to all the speakers who shared their knowledge, and to everyone who attended and contributed to such an engaging evening. The enthusiasm from students made the event truly special, and we’re excited for everything the IEEE UCT Student Chapter has planned for 2026.

💥 IEEE UCT at Plaza Day 2026 💥

On Thursday, the IEEE UCT Student Chapter hosted a vibrant stall where we had the opportunity to connect with incoming students, organisations, lecturers and other societies.

We were proud to showcase what the chapter has to offer for those interested in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechatronics and Computer Science.

Throughout the day, we:
🔹 Interacted with students across many faculties and departments
🔹 Shared insights into future industry talks, site visits and networking events
🔹 Highlighted the benefits of joining the global IEEE organisation
🔹 Welcomed many new students to the chapter

Additionally, we were thrilled to collaborate with the FSA UCT Racing team, a project where many of our members are contributing to the development of UCT’s first Formula-style car.

Further thanks must be given to the MechatronicSystems.Group for the support in creating an exciting and engaging stall.

What truly made the day special were the many enthusiastic students who were eager to learn about the society and the opportunities available to them. The energy and interest we experienced were absolutely phenomenal.
