Great conversations at the CorrISA Cape Region AGM + Fireside Chat.

Always good to be in the room when the corrosion and coatings community gets together to talk about where the industry is heading.

The fireside chat was a highlight — honest discussion on the trends shaping corrosion management in South Africa, from the people doing the work every day.

Thanks to CorrISA Cape Region for putting together a great event, and to everyone we caught up with on the day.

Inspectors can spend up to 30% of their working week just producing reports.

That's a day and a half, every week, not measuring — writing up what you already measured.

ElcoMaster® (Elcometer's data management software) closes that gap:

→ Easy to connect — the gauge wizard makes connecting via Bluetooth® or USB simple, no learning a new interface per instrument

→ One platform, every gauge — coating thickness, surface profile, adhesion, gloss, salt contamination, climatic conditions and more, all through the same software

→ Import existing reports — scan in what you've already got, drag & drop your data where you want it

→ Export, print or send — PDF, Excel, CSV or email, straight from ElcoMaster®, even on site

→ Cloud access — real-time quality control across multiple sites, so data isn't stuck on one laptop

It's not just the reading. It's what happens to it next — bespoke, professional reports in seconds instead of hours back at a desk.

🌡️ You can't control the weather. You can measure it.

Before a coating goes onto a surface, environmental conditions need to be considered.

Air temperature. Surface temperature. Relative humidity. Dew point.

These measurements help coating inspectors determine whether conditions are suitable for application.

Don't rely on how the day feels. Measure the conditions.

What if half your inspection kit disappeared tomorrow?

No surface profile measurement.
No soluble salt testing.
No DFT readings.
No environmental condition checks.
No material thickness measurements.

Suddenly, some pretty important questions become a lot harder to answer.

The right inspection equipment doesn't just give you a number — it gives you the information you need to make informed decisions in the field.

🔍 Good inspection starts with the right tools.

What would be the first instrument you'd miss?

🧂 Behind the Gauge: Salt Testing

You can't always see soluble salts on a surface.

So how do you know they're there?

The Bresle method provides a simple way to measure soluble salt contamination before coating.

A small test patch is applied to the prepared surface, allowing soluble salts to be extracted and measured. The result gives the inspector a measurable indication of surface contamination.

Why does that matter?

Because knowing what's on the surface before the coating goes on can help prevent problems later.

🔍 Don't guess what's on the surface. Measure it.

🧂 Can you see salt contamination?

Not all surface contamination is visible.

Soluble salts left on a prepared steel surface can attract moisture and contribute to coating problems and premature corrosion.

That’s why checking for soluble salts before coating can be an important part of surface preparation.

If you can't see it, measure it.

🔍 Behind the Gauge: Surface Profile Gauge

Too smooth, and coating fails to adhere. Too rough, and the peaks stay exposed — rust starting before the job's even finished.

Surface profile height determines adhesion, coverage, and how much coating you actually need. Get it wrong in either direction, and it shows up later as wasted material or premature failure.

This is how you measure it before it becomes a problem.

🔍 New series: Behind the Gauge

Over the next few weeks, we're breaking down the instruments our customers rely on every day — what they do, how they're used on-site, and why the readings matter.

First up: the ultrasonic material thickness gauge.

Rust doesn't announce itself. Thickness loss does — and this is how you catch it before it becomes a problem.

Coating thickness. Surface profile. Adhesion. Climatic conditions. Surface cleanliness.

Most inspection jobs touch more than one of these — which means most inspectors need more than one gauge, and a clear sense of what each one is actually for.

In this clip, Graham Duk walks through the Elcometer range — what each instrument measures, and where it fits into the bigger quality-control picture on a coating job.

We've supplied this range since 1947. Getting the right instrument into the right hands is still the part we care most about.

Damp doesn't always announce itself.

By the time paint is peeling or walls are staining, the damage has usually been building for a while. The real risk is the moisture you can't see — trapped behind plaster, under flooring, inside timber — quietly doing damage long before it shows on the surface.

That's the problem with guessing. You can suspect damp. You can't confirm it without measuring it.

A moisture meter takes the guesswork out — giving you an accurate reading before you spend money on repairs, treatments, or renovations that might be solving the wrong problem entirely.

At BAMR, we supply the instruments professionals trust to get that answer right — accurately, quickly, and with confidence.

📍 Suspect damp? Don't guess. Measure it.
