Did you know the Elcometer 456 scan probe can log over 140 readings per minute in Auto Repeat Mode?

Graham Duk took coating inspectors through it hands-on. Slide the probe across the surface, lift it off, and the gauge shows the average, highest and lowest thickness. In Auto Repeat Mode it records a reading about every half second.

Behind the Gauge: Why dew-point monitoring still decides whether a coating succeeds or fails

Even the best modern coatings can fail if the surface is colder than the dew point when you apply them.

Here's the simple physics:

Warm air holds more moisture. When that air meets a cooler steel surface, moisture condenses — often as a thin, invisible film. Paint over that film and you trap moisture. The result? Blistering, delamination or under-film corrosion months later.

A climatic gauge (dew-point meter) measures three things in seconds:

▶️ Air temperature
▶️ Relative humidity
▶️ Surface temperature

It then calculates the dew point and the difference (ΔT) between surface temperature and dew point. Standard practice — reflected in ISO 12944 and equivalent specs — requires the surface to be at least 3°C above the dew point before you start coating.

That's why the instrument still matters in 2026 — modern coatings are more advanced, but the laws of physics haven't changed.
