One of the most common mistakes we see in coating inspection is not using the correct instruments. 🔧

It's not always about operator error — often it comes down to using a gauge that isn't suited for the job, or one that hasn't been properly calibrated for the substrate or coating type being measured.

The result? Readings that look fine on paper but don't reflect what's actually happening on the surface.

In an industry where coating failure carries real cost, the right instrument isn't a nice-to-have — it's essential.

If you're unsure whether your team is using the correct instruments for coating inspection, reach out to us at [email protected] — we're happy to help.

Getting the basics right makes all the difference. 🎯

Graham recently visited the attendees of the training conducted at EI Sandblasting for a hands-on introduction to coating inspection — covering the fundamentals of surface preparation, dry film thickness measurement, and what to look out for in the field.

In an industry where corners are easily cut, understanding the basics of coating inspection is what separates a coating that lasts from one that fails prematurely.

A big thank you to EI Sandblasting for having us — it's always a pleasure working with teams who are committed to getting it right.

Moisture is invisible. So is the damage it causes — until it's too late.

One of the most common reasons a coating fails isn't poor application. It's moisture in the substrate that nobody checked for before the job started.

Wood, concrete, plaster — if there's moisture present and you coat over it, you're setting yourself up for blistering, peeling and costly rework.

A moisture meter takes the guesswork out of the equation. A quick, non-destructive reading tells you whether a surface is ready to coat — before a single drop of paint goes down.

It's a small step that prevents a very expensive problem.

Ask us about our range of moisture meters for wood, concrete and building materials. 👇

1946. A father starts a business with a simple belief — that quality instrumentation, backed by honest service, makes a difference.

Fast forward to today. Three generations of the Duk family later, that belief hasn't changed.

Fred built the foundation. His son Frank took the reins. And now Graham carries the torch — with the same values, the same passion for precision, and the same personal touch that started it all.

Nearly 80 years in, we're proud of where we've come from. And even more excited about where we're going.

Thank you to every client, partner and industry colleague who has been part of this journey. 🇿🇦

80 years of people, partnerships, and progress.

On 22 May, we took a moment to celebrate it all—together—with a day of bowls and a special lunch at Constantia Glen.

These moments remind us what really matters. Thank you for being part of our story. 🎉

🧪 MYTH BUSTED: “Thicker coating = better protection”

This is one of the most common assumptions in the coatings industry… but it’s not always true.

While it might seem logical that more coating means more protection, the reality is more complex.

👉 If a coating is applied too thick:
It may not cure properly
It can crack or peel over time
It may lose adhesion to the surface
It can actually reduce long-term performance

👉 What really matters is:
✔️ Correct surface preparation
✔️ Proper coating system selection
✔️ Accurate film thickness (as specified)
✔️ Controlled application process

The goal isn’t “more coating” — it’s the right coating, applied correctly.
That’s exactly why measurement and inspection are so critical in ensuring long-term protection.
