It was a pleasure welcoming Julia Meintjes from Threads of Africa to Ruth Prowse School of Art for an inspiring conversation around creativity, craftsmanship, and the potential for future collaboration.

Threads of Africa is a remarkable project that works with master weavers from the Thukela Valley in KwaZulu-Natal, combining traditional African weaving techniques with materials such as copper, silver, brass, and even gold wire to create contemporary bowls, bangles, and sculptural works. Rooted in heritage, storytelling, and handmade processes, the project highlights the incredible skill and cultural knowledge of its artists while bringing these works into contemporary art and design spaces internationally.

The visit opened up exciting discussions about their project, possible opportunities for our students and exposure to real-world creative practices.

We look forward to continuing the conversation and exploring meaningful ways that our students and the Threads of Africa project could connect going forward.
