Can a repair in polished stainless ever be truly invisible?

It can. The roll bar on a Porsche Targa is polished stainless, and holes from retrofitted brackets show up immediately.

What is a cracked cylinder head actually worth?

If the replacement is hard to source, or does not exist at all, the answer is quite a lot.

Part two of this series shows build-up welding on an aluminium cylinder head using the Lampert Micro Arc Welder:

Aluminium welding rod deposited into cracks and defects
A fully homogeneous bond with the parent material
No thermal overload, virtually no distortion
Resurface afterwards and it goes back into service for years

What is the most expensive part you have had to replace rather than repair?

Are there repairs you currently outsource, replace or turn away because controlling the heat and finish is too difficult?

For a lot of restorers, thin sheet metal is the problem. Too much heat and the panel distorts, the material stresses, and a simple repair becomes hours of filler.

Which two machines earn their bench space fastest?

For Lindsey of The Jewellers Blend, it is the Foredom suspension motor and the ultrasonic cleaner.

The Foredom:

Grinding, sanding, polishing, drilling and finishing from one motor
Change the handpiece or burr and it does a different job

What does a setter actually need from a supplier?

Mostly, that the thing they are looking for is there.

Kallie and Lindsey of The Jewellers Blend are a husband and wife team who have sourced from Cape Tools for fifteen years. He sets, she is the goldsmith.

In part one, Kallie finishes a gold ring and sets some very small stones. Fine setting work leaves no room for a tool that is nearly right, which is why he says he can always find what he needs on our shelves.

Two she relies on:

Casting clay for one-off and small-run casting

What has actually changed at the bench this year?

Five things worth knowing about:

Rhodium got expensive, and platinum-based alternatives now give you a bright white for far less
Lab-grown stones are everywhere, and a loupe will not separate them from natural
Plating chemistry got safer, with cyanide-free systems becoming the standard
Shellac finally has a rival in thermoplastics that need only hot water
Heat barriers mean you can solder right next to pearls, enamel and resin

None of it is dramatic on its own. Together it adds up to a bench that works differently from three years ago.
